From Wealth of Nations to Common Wealth of Nations

With the recent publication by Forbes magazine of the ranking of the world’s richest people, a new prospect comes into focus. According to Forbes, there are now around 950 billionaires in the world, with an estimated combined wealth of $3.5 trillion. That’s up an amazing $900 billion in just one year. Even after all the yachts, mansions and luxury living that money can buy, have been funded many times over, these billionaires will still have nearly $3.5 trillion to change the world. Suppose they pooled their wealth, as Buffett has done with Bill and Melinda Gates. By standard and conservative principles of foundation management, a $3.5 trillion endowment would have a 5 percent payout of around $175 billion, an amount sufficient to extend basic health care to all the poorest of the world; end massive pandemics of AIDS, TB, and malaria; jump-start an African Green Revolution; end the digital divide; and address the crying need for safe drinking water for one billion people. The group of fewer than one thousand people would outstrip the entire $105 billion development aid of the twenty-two donor governments that represent a combined population of nearly one billion people. In short, this billionaires’ foundation would be enough to end extreme poverty.

Similarly, companies can play a huge role not only as providers of technology but also as customers of local output from impoverished regions. When companies like Starbucks, Nike, or Gap source from low-income communities, they are not creating poverty (as is sometimes alleged) but reducing it. Of course, this is only true if these companies appease dedicated NGOs like Global Witness, Oxfam, the Interfaith Centre on Corporate Responsibility, Amnesty International and CERES and abide by internationally recognised labour standards and human rights principles related to community rights, workers’ health, and so on.

Quantum of so less?

The US hosts around 5% of the world’s population, but consumes over 25% of the world’s resources and is responsible for a whopping 44% of the carbon emissions in the world. Similarly, 23% in the developed world consume over 66% of the world’s natural resources, while the third world countries consume only between 0.5 to 5%. Bank lending in the US now is astoundingly around $7 trillion – almost 58% of its GDP (GDP being around $12 trillion in real terms) – according to the US Federal Reserve. The same in a poorest of poor country like Nigeria was around $41.97 billion in 2007; and in India at over $500 billion; again almost half of their respective GDPs, and that too in a situation where half of the population does not have access to bank credit. The corollary is quite straightforward. It’s not just the borrowers, but the lenders too who’re to blame. Hey, wasn’t the sub-prime crisis about that only?

The Antidote to Complexity: ‘Brutally Simple Thinking’

Let’s begin from the Indian story of this global agency. It was in the year 2005, when Kamal Oberoi – the then president of JWT for twenty long years – was approached by Tom Derrick, Asia-Pacific Chairman, M&C Saatchi, to start off the Indian arm of the UK-based global advertising agency. And that was the beginning of the Indian stint of an agency, which stands out to be the only agency to be international from birth.

Oberoi then encouraged the agency’s religion of ‘Brutally Simple Thinking,’ which stands out till today. Little did the ad veteran know then that within a span of just three years, his small agency (that started off with actually one person and zero clients in his hands) would become a full fledged independent agency, with a workforce of over sixty people and host to extremely prestigious clients. One such client is Jet Airways, that awarded its $11-million global advertising account to M&C Saatchi’s India operations in 2007, following an extensive selection process that lasted over six months.

Focus on strengths…

As per industry experts, M&M should perhaps focus on its core competencies, i.e. utility vehicles, rather than dissipating its energies on a number of segments. As a known and trusted brand in the UV fraternity, M&M should develop strategies that allow it to showcase its technological edge on the UV platform. Also, unlike the west, where SUV sales are declining, in India, SUV or premium UV vehicles will enjoy higher demands in the coming years. Perhaps, M&M should use its UV prowess to leverage its position in the SUV segment. The revolutionary 2.2 MHawk powered Scorpio, for instance, is already being well received by the market and M&M should move forward in the direction. The company can also increase its presence across the UV market by increasing product alternatives and variants. The new found impetus on environmentally friendly alternatives can be demonstrated through the UV segment as well, easily marketed (and of course flaunted) as a first in the industry. An amalgamation strategy, combining both utility vehicles and green technology just might be the best bet for M&M.

However, 2008 was a year that has gone completely in favour of the G1. With global markets trapped in the ongoing turmoil, many handsets operators like Samsung, LG and even Nokia had cut down expectations. Even experts at research firm Gartner predicted the growth rate of the handset market to fall to single digit during the 2009; yet HTC increased its sales forecast for G1 and others for the coming year, expecting to sell upto 2.0 million handsets by the December 2009.

Now here we need a slight redirection. Getting ‘smart on phone’ necessarily doesn’t mean that consumers have been bitten by the ‘serious’ smart bug, for there’s music which has become a craze all across the world and constitutes to be a big part of the value-added services. To be able to store music and play back high-quality music is predominantly a feature supported by the handset. Even today, there are many phones available that vouch for their sound qualities. As a matter of fact companies like Sony Ericsson and Motorola have an entire range of products to cater to the music lovers. Going beyond we are sure to see handsets that would have better data capacity to store more music and the quality of playback too would improve with time. Like LG, which during the early part of 2008 announced its tie-up with Dolby, there are bound to be more who would follow a similar path. A similar development is also happening on the movies front. This is also another area where the iPhone scores high. The reason being that just like the PC, if you buffer a video clip on the iPhone, you wouldn’t require buffering again to replay it (a feature that is not present in most other such phones).

The Niche Way: With over 12 telecom operators in every circle by 2012, Plan B would certainly involve targeting niche segments within the market. TTSL’s partnership with Virgin Mobile (targeting the urban youth) is a step in that direction. Prasad Narsimhan, CMO, Virgin Mobile explains, “Youth is a large part of the entire consumer base in India. We expect that more than 50 million youth customers to be added in the telecom market.” Going forward, existing players may even launch different brands for different segments. A Vodafone Y for the youth anyone?

International Operations: Remember the recent hullabaloo over who is going to take over African telecom major MTN? Yeah! Well, the biggest lollipop for both RCOM and Bharti Airtel in acquiring MTN was its wide subscriber base in the African region, where ARPUs are–hold your breath–as high as $35. Even the lowest ARPU in Africa continues to be $7, higher than the average $5-6 ARPU in India. Even if their MTN takeover bid was unsuccessful, both companies are now looking at starting operations in Sri Lanka. Buzz is that RCOM may be even bidding for Iran’s third mobile phone service license, at an estimated $1 billion. Others are attempting to enhance their enterprise business on a global scale. “We already have 1,400 enterprise customers globally in US, UK, France, Germany, Benelux, Singapore and Australia,” boasts S.P. Shukla of RCOM.

Standing ‘Steel’ is the only option!

The ghost of the American financial meltdown continues to haunt the global economy. And after some wait, the steel giants have received the bad news too, with the price of steel experiencing a free fall at the moment, having fallen by almost 40% from the peak value reached during the past two years. Worse, the prevailing recessionary conditions promise to push prices southwards, thereby raising questions on the future prospects of the 'cyclical' global steel industry.

Major Players like ArcelorMittal, Tata-Corus, Baosteel et al have decided to slash down their annual production volumes to counterbalance the current situation. "Even iron ore and coal exporters all across the globe are facing the heat as a number of steel producers have requested delays in ore shipments in light of the collapse in the world steel prices and lower forecasted production,” adds Matt Robinson, Economist, Moody's Economy.com. The current situation presents a gloomy picture when compared to the enthusiasm shown in the industry two years back. Various multi-million and multi-billion delas were struck and the demand of steel was rising by a healthy 5-6% y-o-y. Today, the change is nowhere close to being positive as Michael Englund, Principal Director and Chief Economist, Action Economics suggests, “Steel producers will need to adjust output for the global slowdown and we have yet to gauge the magnitude of the drop-back in global demand.” The Chinese steel producers are the worst affected as experts predict their annual steel production and consumption to drop by 50-60 million tonne in 2009 – a fall of 30%! The North American steel industry has also had its operating rate slashed to 78%, its lowest since December 2006. The tumbling stock prices of the steel giants (ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steelmaker's share price plunged by 19.4% ending at $27.20, after sliding to a new 12-month low of $27.05 on October 16, 2008) testifies their predicaments, much of which will be reflected in the next annual financial disclosure.

For now, the only reassurance to steel makers is that the 'supply-demand mismatch' won’t last forever, just like the desire to 'grow & build' never dies!

Finally, after waiting for decades, the Supreme Court ordered establishment of three institutions at the state level with a view to insulating the police from extraneous influences, according functional autonomy and ensuring accountability. These included a State Security Commission to lay down policies and give directions relating to preventive and service-oriented functions of the police, a Police Establishment Board, comprising the Director-General of Police and four other senior officers to decide on all transfers, postings, promotions and a Police Complaints Authority at the district and state level to look into allegations of misconduct by police personnel. It is worth checking out if any of these mechanisms are in place. “Everyone loves cop bashing. They are under constant pressure to show results. Politicians use them as domestic servants and commission agents,” Tarun Vijay, Director of BJP’s Shyama Prasad Mukerjee Research Foundation, told B&E.

The crisis is compounded because there is no real-time intelligence. Questions CPM MP, Nilotpal Basu: “How does the police know who is hiding in a ghetto unless you have credible sources there and how can you have credible sources when a community (Muslims) is feeling alienated?” he asks. That is a point to ponder. When there is so much to be made of terror attacks, with the Karnataka government even unwilling to take action against Bajrang Dal thugs assaulting and intimidating Christians, a sense of discrimination is bound to set in. For India, that does not bode well. Organised and articulate, bleeding heart liberals are quick to condemn the police, freely distributing character certificates to non-state forces. Now with the latest blast in south Delhi’s Mehrauli claiming two lives, the circle of explosions and encounters appears to have become more vicious.
