'Diggi Raja' has attained an enviable political stature, and has kept his feet firmly on the ground

Once an opener and wicket-keeper in his college team, 'Diggi Raja' or Digvijay Singh can’t help but compare politics with cricket. In fact, he feels that both have uncanny resemblance in their characteristics. Diggi Raja was once heard saying that politics was like batting, where a batsman must learn to tackle beamers in order to score. Also, like batsman, politicians need immense patience to wait for the right occasion to strike and when the moment comes, make some quick decisions. We can’t agree more.

Digvijay Singh joined politics when he had barely crossed his teens. He ruled India’s then largest state, Madhya Pradesh for close to a decade – 1993 to 2003 – and when he lost the elections in 2003, he put on a very brave face, something so uncommon in Indian political class, and decided not to contest elections for the next 10 years. He was inducted in the core group of the party and assigned the post of General Secretary. His profile changed forever. Now, like his peer Ahmad Patel, he has become the eyes and ears of not only Rahul Gandhi, but of the party high-command itself. For example, in a recent meeting, he opined that the party should promote youngsters for seats that it considers “tough ones”. The idea struck a chord where it mattered the most: Rahul Gandhi.

Here’s a new avenue for individuals to unleash their creativity: Cell phone cinema!

Many people may argue that mobile phone radiation is harmful to one’s health. Some say it can damage one’s DNA; some put up videos on YouTube showing how it can cook an egg and even make popcorns! Worst of all, phones with cameras are often used by the disoriented and perverted minds to come up with scandalous MMS videos. However, Asian Academy of Film & Television (AAFT) has given mobile phone users a new direction, toward the art of movie making. So, as it goes ahead promoting this radiation-emitting monster, no one, as yet, is complaining. This year, on 21st January, 2009, it organised the 2nd International Film Festival of Cell Phone Cinema, which aims at providing a platform for creative individuals to create masterpieces by making use of this rapidly growing technology. Here, the competition was in the field of fiction/music videos, reality/electronic news gathering, and still images, wherein the participants are expected to use mobile phones only in order to take photographs, and videos are not to exceed the time limit of three minutes. The competition witnessed 500 entries from over 20 countries.

WELFARE SCHEMES: One of the better known – and controversial – features of the UPA government has been the emphasis it has put on welfare schemes for the poor. The most important of this is the National Rural Employment Guarantee Program (NREGP) that promises at least 100 days of employment to the poor in rural areas. Sure, there have been many valid criticisms of corruption and leakages. But the fact is that rich farmers in Punjab are finding it desperately difficult to find labourers to work in their farms. NREGP has a lot to do with this, despite the leakages. Of course, the rural poor who benefit from NREGP will not be buying plasma TV sets; but the small amounts they will spend keeps the economy chugging along. No matter what prejudiced critics say, companies like ITC and HUL have shown that there is a fortune to be made at the bottom of the pyramid. The NREGP is consistently broadening the base of the pyramid!

Government needs to build consensus for the merger of the armies

The Maoist government’s move to merge its guerrilla fighters with the Nepal Army has left the country deeply divided. Many fear this will politicise the army including the Army Chief, Rukmangad Katuwal himself. Clearly, Katuwal is unhappy with the panel set up by the four-month old Maoist-led government, which has been tasked to oversee the merger logistics. If it does take place, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and the Nepal Army (NA) – which have skirmished fiercely during the decade-long guerrilla war – are bound to clash in various ways. Critics agree, and point out to the nearly 13,000 people who were wiped out in the civil war that ended only in 2006.

The thousands of NA and PLA cadres who lost their family members in that prolonged war of attrition continue to be virtual antagonists. And even those who were not directly affected feel that having such unlikely bedfellows in the armed forces is bound to hurt Nepal's unity.

We must enable Afghans to look after themselves and defend their country, to have a future in Afghanistan,

But this also requires helping those people who out of desperation have fallen prey to extremist forces. Only utter hopelessness can drive so young a man to such an act. We must rescue these people by giving them a better future, which only more education and new opportunities can bring. Desperation and poverty are the tools used by evil forces to raise their terrorist cadres. But that environment will not change if political will is lacking, and if there is no action by the US and the governments of the region to get our economies to create jobs that offer hope. Moreover, in order to deny terrorists institutional support, we must bring institutional strength to Afghanistan. We must enable Afghans to look after themselves and defend their country, to have a future in Afghanistan, to have hope of raising their children in Afghanistan.

Where’ve all the tomboys gone?

Girls of today don’t wanna play ball no more... Here’s all the dope!

remember when I was in school, full-length pants reaching up to the ankles, collared t-shirts and caps were my thing, more than those frilly pink dresses and dolls. Although most of my girl friends crinkled their nose at the mention of boys and sports, few of us had the least qualms in picking up the bat or gearing up for a bicycle race with them. Least bothered about the kind of demeanour a girl should display, I must admit, I kind of relished the title of ‘tomboy’ bestowed upon me in school.

Today, when I look at school going kids, the involvement in outdoor sports and games seems to have been substituted with discussions of flames and crushes. So more than the ‘Look, we are better’ competition that once shaped boy-girl interaction, it has now been replaced with ‘Better look at me!’ And which is why I don’t see much of my kind of childhood days in the kids of the present generation. When asked about this observation of Mrs. Rose, a school teacher, she said, “Times are very different from what it was 5-7 years ago. Back then, I could easily spot about 7-8 girls from a class of 40 who were tomboys. They would want to stay abreast with all the activities that boys were involved in, they would want to dress up like them, with their ties hanging loose, socks rolled down and the sleeves of the shirts rolled up on the arm.” Mrs. Rose has now observed the number of girls with that tomboy attitude diminishing. “These days, girls are extremely conscious of their sexuality from a very young age, and are also very aware of the attraction factor between boys and girls. That’s why they are more involved in girl activities like dressing up and consciously behaving like the way girls are supposed to. I’ve noticed that now-a-days girls talk about boys, fashion and accessories from a very young age, which was not the case a few years ago,” she said. The change in lifestyle patterns is also influenced by the media to a large extent. Previously, it was more of a competition to stand up together with the boys which probably brought in the idea of being like them. Reena Pandey, a mother of two daughters has much to add to that.

Mere rhetoric can fall flat unless Obama moves in fast to repair the Middle East

Mr. Obama, can you really be an ‘honest broker’?

The Palestine question is still unanswered and it is still not apparent if the US military will pull out from Iraq and Afghanistan. Thus, Obama will have to move towards the populace of the Middle East in a reasonable conduct and make hard work to put up assurances. In the last eight years, the people of the Middle East witnessed more prejudice and absolutely lost confidence in US officials, whose standing has fallen to an unsurpassed low in the region. And the gone-astray confidence cannot be reinstated by rhetoric. Obama ought to put the Middle East conflict on the peak of his foreign policy programme and make serious and honest efforts to locate a just resolution for the never-ending crisis.

Middle Eastern people’s analysis of US policy will not be transformed merely by a triumph for Barack Obama. Rather, they want to see no-nonsense steps by him to end the occupation of their land. The Palestine question will be the gravest challenge. If a sovereign Palestinian state with Beit-ul-Moqaddas (Jerusalem) as its capital is not created, the state of affairs in the region will beyond doubt deteriorate.

That’s the Devil and the Deep Sea conundrum. Competition ensures that the highly price sensitive consumer today has minimal loyalty to any airline [and is even ready to switch to the Indian Railways: read 4Ps B&M cover story, June 20-July 3, 2008, ‘Laloo has the last laugh’]. The initial 3Gs are no big help in increasing switching cost of the customer, neither are promo tactics like frequent flyer or advertising various quality awards.

The worst part is that the Kingfisher combine has seen passenger market share grow to close to 30%.That is simply fabulous! But if fabulous gets fabulous losses, then any self-respecting CEO should close down the business model. Air India has cancelled around 30 flights, Jet Airways 20 flights, SpiceJet over 17 while even Deccan has cancelled 50 flights due to mounting losses. To their credit, Kingfisher, which used to operate 218 flights on 38 destinations, pruned 10 percent of its flights and also sent 47 expatriate engineers back home to cut the operating cost.

We started with the May 2008 BCG report (The Return of the Strategist) where this former supporter of M&As confirms, “The key question is not whether deal volumes and values will fall or rise, but whether it is still [ever] possible to generate [any] value from [M&A] transactions!... More than half of mergers destroy value for acquirers’ shareholders!” The May 2007 research (Why M&A Deals Are Bad For Shareholders) of the motherlode of all institutions, HBS, quotes, “Most M&A deals destroy shareholder value!”

How has the thinking been a few years back? The April 2004 HBS paper (Should We Brace Ourselves For Another Era Of M&A Value Destruction?) states eloquently, “In the end, M&A is a flawed process, invented by brokers, lawyers and CEOs with super-sized egos!” MarkSirower, author of the famous book Synergy Trap, shows how, on an average, 2/3rds of all deals end up destroying shareholder value. Even the famed McKinsey, once a fanatic supporter of M&As, had to accept that in the US & UK, only one quarter of all M&As even recovered the merger costs.

As of now, Obama’s focus is on the $700 billion financial rescue package passed by the Bush administration. He has also advocated a second stimulus package to fuel the economy. In his manifesto, Obama has talked about a $50 billion package, which includes $20 billion in tax rebates, $10 billion to extend unemployment benefits, $10 billion to prevent foreclosure on primary residences and aid state governments. But Bill Shughart, economics professor at the University of Mississippi, feels that a stimulus package will only bring additional deficits to the elephantine $1 trillion deficits of the US economy. However, it is also felt that if the stimulus package is designed such that money is used more to pump dollars in infrastructure rather then going directly to the taxpayers, it will help the economy more as it will create jobs and would reap long term benefits. Roosevelt used a similar approach in the 1930s.

Obama is planning to work on both ends. On one hand, he has promised a tax structure to cushion the middle class Americans to deal better with recession, on the other, he is looking for long term solutions to bail out the economy. For this, he plans to invest in US infrastructure to create jobs in the long term and also reduce dependence on oil. He plans to create a National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank and infuse $60 billion over 10 years, to finance transportation infrastructure projects across US. As per estimates, these projects will create up to two million new jobs (direct & indirect).

Alternate fuel! In their blind quest for finding out god’s gift of a substitute for petrol, automobile companies are attempting to move the damned mountain when all they had to do was to change the course of the river. With hybrids getting beaten in hype only by this third dimwit of a concept called alternate fuel, car companies are only taking themselves and of course the customers for a royal ride attempting to create cars that run on grandiose non-market-tested ‘alternate’ fuel. Let me give you a primer on the alternate fuels available in the market and their ridiculous inconsistency. (a) Biomass: Fuel from plant matter or even waste material. Famous biomass fuels: methanol and ethanol. Unsolvable issues (for the next ten years) remain on how much arable land will be used (wasted) to host plant matter to produce required ‘cost effective’ ethanol. Pollution issues in ethanol production cycle are totally unresolved. Worse, methanol as fuel is not even efficient! (b) Hydrogen: Talk to me after 20 years and I’ll show you an affordable price-effective fuel cell that can logically power a car on the road. Currently, DuPont can fix one up for you in your car for the price of a mini-satellite. (c) Photo-voltaic energy from the sun; solar powered cars: Keep the windows open and make sure you don’t get embarrassed driving a car with no passenger seat at 10 miles an hour. (d) Battery operated hybrids: Been there, done that!

Well, the answers are complicated. I wonder often: do we need a share market at all in the first place? I have always had a personal objection to the paper ownership of others’ sweat and toil. That’s why the worker feels so alienated from what he does in a modern-day large corporation, while someone who contributes nothing to the organisation’s production process reaps the profits on the basis of capital power. But then, entrepreneurs need money to create production and in turn jobs and growth, don’t they? But entrepreneurship also means responsibility and accountability; and if entrepreneurship is responsible, then shouldn’t entrepreneurs be answerable about the money that they take from others?

Does Dabur''s growth story have the makings of another HUL?

The imperative now is to take this growth story further through carefully planned out expansions, organic or inorganic, in new and interesting areas. Duggal, who particularly admires Lakshmi Mittal for the way he spots opportunities, is a firm believer in what management guru C. K. Prahlad does not stand for, i.e. core competency. Duggal is of the opinion that if he had not moved from the ayurvedic medicine portfolio, Dabur would not have crossed Rs.20 billion in turnover the way it has crossed today. And consumer health, the division for ayurvedic medicines accounts for just about 5-10% of that portfolio, which shows how much the company has reinvented itself.

Dabur''s ''Vision 2010'', which it had unveiled way back in 2006, was to double its turnover by FY 2009-10. The company is clearly targetting growth at a breakneck pace. But as we have seen in the case of HUL in the 1990s, breakneck growth comes at a price. HUL had become quite large and unwieldy, and saw some very difficult times in the early part of this century when its growth stagnated and it had to cut down on its brands phenomenally. Does Dabur''s growth story have the makings of another HUL? Or would Dabur''s new war, led by Duggal''s firm belief in expanding horizons (although he does say that Dabur does not want to be reckless) have dramatically different consequences, and lead to Dabur India actually creating history in the Indian FMCG space? For that, we have to go deeper to understand the dynamics of Dabur''s new war.
