When ranks do make a difference

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

POLICY INITIATIVEIndia needs to give weightage its social development too...

socio-economic problem of India is well affecting the business climate of India at global forums too. This year, India slipped to 48th position in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index and to 31st position in Business Competitiveness Index. These rankings are largely affected by the socio-economic parameters like sustainable national prosperity (calculated using per capita GDP) and the political and social context of the nation.

Intensive usage of technology, its generation and the incidence of technology transfer to India is worth appreciating, but the penetration and implementation of the latest technologies are still quite low when compared with international standards. This low penetration had led to low levels of per capita income which eventually degrade India’s rank at the global forum. Moreover, Indian government had failed drastically in reducing the public sector deficit (one of the highest in the world) and corruption in infrastructural development. Poor infrastructure, erratic power supply, inefficient bureaucracy, corruption, tax regulations & bad roads are major hurdles for upcoming entrepreneurs and also de-motivate them in starting their business units. These rankings not only degrades India’s image at global business forums but also abstain new entrepreneurial start-ups. Development of India cannot fructify on discreet policies, but actually on a centralised policies covering both social and economical aspects. After all, without society can business thrive?

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Arun Kumar KapoorThe potential for the DTH sector in India looks very bright, but for the bottleneck of heavy taxes

India is an exceptional country in more ways than one. And the DTH landscape in the country is a case in point. Nowhere else in the world there are more than two DTH players but India, where there are currently three players operational (Dish TV, Tata Sky & DD direct) and three more (Reliance ADAG, Bharti & Sun Direct) bracing for an entry soon. In the coming few years, investments around $4 billion are expected to drive the growth of the sector. A lot of PE players have also shown keen interest. Early this year, Singapore’s Temasek Holdings invested $55.5 million for 10% stake in Tata Sky. The market buzz says that Tata Sky is up for a second round sale of stake to PE players like Providence Equity Partners, Blackstone Group & Goldman Sachs, to raise $150-$200 million. Subhash Chandra’s Dish TV is also in talks for PE investments.

What makes the DTH space so attractive to the investors & corporates? “There are multiple things happening that will boost the DTH business in the country in coming years” comments Arun Kumar Kapoor, CEO, Dish TV. Digitisation started picking its pace in the country only a couple of years ago. So, there is a huge untapped opportunity to all the digital platforms of content distribution including DTH, Digital cable & IPTV. By the end of this year, the total number of digitised homes in the country is supposed to be around 7 million. The majority 4.5 million will be DTH homes, 2 million will be digital cable and a nominal 0.4 million of them will be IPTV homes. By 2010, around 37 million homes should go digital of which DTH will grab the lion’s share of around 17-20 million homes. And with internet penetration, particularly broadband, not really much to write home about, IPTV would take quite a while to catch up.

Apart from that, CAS rollout is also supposed to fuel the DTH growth. The first phase of CAS roll out (in partial areas of Delhi, Mumbai & Kolkata) gave a huge boost to the sales of DTH set top boxes. There are approximately 7.9 million C&S homes in Delhi, Mumbai & Kolkata. Out of these, 1.6 million were deluged by first phase of CAS & 20% of this 1.6 million opted for DTH. With the second phase of CAS roll out, another 6.3 million homes will be affected. Going by the 20% theory, another 1.2 million (at least) homes are supposed to opt for DTH. And with government aiming to mandate CAS in another 50 odd cities over the next two years, imagine what will be the potential of the DTH space in India even if we just stick to the 20% theory! Arun candidly points out, “People are generally happy with their status quo but once they are forced to shift to a better technology, many of them chose DTH. This presents a huge opportunity for the DTH space on the whole.”

Rising number of TV sets sold in the country is another major driver of the DTH business. Around 14 million Television sets are sold annually in the country, out of which four to five million TV sets are high end. Definitely a majority of these customers are expected to opt for DTH. Says Arun, “In a country like ours, where the economy is growing at a rate of 9%, the TV penetration (which is currently 52%) will also go up as the standard of living of people goes up. All this will fuel the growth of DTH. Adds Vikram Kaushik, CEO, Tata Sky, “The road ahead for the DTH players is long but the potential is huge, as the current subscriptions are just a drop in the growing subscriptions in India.”

However, one major challenge that is troubling the DTH players today is the high taxation. There are multiple level taxes on the DTH players – high license fee, then there is service tax apart from which they have to pay entertainment tax in states. As Arun claims, “We are as high taxed as liquor.” But with more players entering, one can expect that increased lobbying will help them bargain for a better taxation arrangement.

Tarnished telecom

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

HORIZONS Policy wars over the telecom sector ignore the consumer

The next time you dial a number from your mobile phone and get the usual ‘traffic congestion’ message, please do not hesitate to curse telecom policy makers and a smart cartel that seems to be determined to control the sector – the consumer be damned. If you hold shares in these companies, you would know by now how your money has multiplied manifold over the last few years – even as you read persistent media reports on how mobile phone companies are losing money because of high costs & low intensity of usage. You must have also been exasperated beyond despair by pesky tele-marketers who seem to mysteriously acquire your so called private cell number even though mobile service operators swear by God, Mayawati & Bill Gates that they never share your numbers with anyone. And of course, if you have just come back from a stint in the US or western Europe, you would know how number portability is an inevitability that telecom companies are simply not allowing.

Anyone reading newspapers, watching TV or checking out media wars on internet would know that India is going through the fourth round of telecom wars. The first round was when the allocation of mobile licenses was rigged by vested interests. The second war was when Mukesh Ambani barged into the sector with 40 paise a minute phone calls through the back door. The third war was when the big boys started consolidating. And now, the fourth war is because everybody seems to be fighting for spectrum. Most readers are completely confused by the spectrum controversy. They have no clue what the whole thing is all about. Quite simply, the controversy is akin to petroleum companies trying to corner as many oil and gas fields as possible to ensure that their stranglehold over the market continues well into the future. Most regulators have tried hard but failed spectacularly to control the oil companies from cornering fields and market shares. Something similar seems to be happening in the telecom sector. Each big boy wants control over spectrum – that will hand over an unfair advantage over competitors. In the process, no one is talking about how competition of the genuine kind will help the consumer and the industry, as planted stories, half truths and outright lies are spread all across mainstream media. Even after this cynical display of ‘lobby’ power, policy makers can earn the undying gratitude of Indian phone users if they can simply announce and implement a simple thing – allow user who are not happy with an operator to change the service while retaining the phone number. Number portability has been announced for the nth time. Will it happen?

Airbus & Boeing strive to make competitor’s customers switch

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

The European has taken the lead in the MRO space as it launched its Airbus Engineering and Training Centre in Bangalore last month. This may mark the beginnings of taking advantage of India’s aerospace, engineering & software abilities. And to further understand its significance, it is is the biggest such facility outside Airbus’ headquarters in Toulouse (France). This is the first step in Airbus’ $600 commitment to develop India’s maintenance capabilities, as Airbus has put seven simulators (each costing $15 million) in place at the training centre. The company wishes to employ 2,000 aviation engineers by 2010, which will also provide training to commercial pilots. Six out of the seven simulators are based on A320 model platform, while the last is built on A330 platform (which can be upgraded to A340).

When asked about Airbus’ motive, Enders asserts, “Airbus has emerged as the aircraft manufacturer of choice in India. Last year, 75% of new orders with more than 100 seats, were Airbus planes. We want to build on that success by ensuring mutually beneficial cooperation with the industry and research institutions in India.”

Not to be left behind, Boeing has revealed its intentions to invest $75 million to set up pilot training facilities. This will ensure an expert integration and after-sales services to its local clients. For, over the next two decades, India will need 856 new commercial aircrafts worth $72 billion. As announced in March 2007, Boeing also plans to infuse $100 million in a MRO facility for Boeing airplanes in Nagpur (Maharashtra).

When asked about the future prospects of India as an MRO base, McNerney ecstatically replied, “I see some significant component work done in the commercial aircraft segment and in defence, especially as the latter segment is open to us (private players) now. We are moving management to India, and we will see a lot more from India in the days to come.”

Obviously, any corporate war in India somehow acquires a political tinge. So is the case with the Airbus-Boeing rivalry. The rumour in the corridors of power is that Boeing’s decision to choose Nagpur as its training centre was pushed by none other than Sharad Pawar, a senior cabinet minister in the current government and who hails from Maharashtra. Similarly, it was Karnataka’s chief ministers who sold the idea to Airbus that Bangalore is a perfect location for any engineering or research facility.

“It’s really great to know that I’m a part of the most admired Indians list this year too. I think, I have been one of the frontrunners in the Biotech sector, which is now considered to be a strong emerging sector. As many as 15 people who made it to the 2007 list of most admired Indians,

If you are still wondering why, just ask any Twenty20 fan and you’ll promptly get your answers.

Among politicians, Rahul Baba’s heightened efforts to mingle with the aam voter in Congress’s traditional strongholds may not have paid off as well for the Congress Party (the near-rout in Karnataka assembly elections seems to be one of the last few nails in the party’s coffin), but for the young ‘yuvraj’ it has meant nearly 11 steps up the Most Admired ladder. Voter apathy toward the Congress has however meant a rise in fortune for former Prime Minister and the Bhartiya Janata Party’s moderate face Atal Behari Vajpayee. He’s gone up by nine places as opposed to the 2007 rankings. Cricketers seem to be the biggest losers however, thanks in no small part to the big debacle at the 2008 Cricket World Cup in West Indies. While Mumbai boy Tendulkar’s fan following still remains somewhat strong (he’s only one step down in the rankings), despite not being at the peak of his playing prowess this year; Ganguly dada has slipped down an astounding 16 places in the rankings. To be remembered is the fact that the 2007 survey had taken place right after Ganguly’s smashing comeback (much to the chagrin of a subdued Greg Chappel) against South Africa, West Indies and Sri Lanka, while this year, the survey was done around the time Team Kolkata was being smashed out of the reckoning in the hugely popular 2008 Indian Premier League. But the bad news for swashbuckling cricketers ends here, thanks to the Twenty20 mania that seems to be sweeping Indians and the world at large. The crown duo – Dhoni and Yuvraaj – that brought home the Twenty20 World Cup to India, have been big gainers in this year’s rankings. Captain M.S. Dhoni has moved up ten places to sit pretty at Rank 27; while Yuvraj Singh has made his maiden entry at Rank 34. If you are still wondering why, just ask any Twenty20 fan and you’ll promptly get your answers.

There is a lot more to go into, but it’s time to get under the skin of the methodology followed for the survey. And after that... enjoy the titillating rankings that will leave you breathless for more. A Greek poet once said: “The ridiculous is more easily retained than the admirable...” We don’t defer, even for a moment :-)

Salman Khan gets a shot at his long lost love yet again.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Khan has been associated with Bollywood directly or indirectly for a long time now of 16 as an yet his busines model is far too superior above the league of ‘just’ simple business minds.

Though, he refusedKhan avers to reveal the names of his project partners, he confirmed that he is bringing Tussauds to India along with six venture capitalists. The strategy is to increase the number of statues of Indian personalities at the Tussauds opening in India as Bobby opines, “The people visiting Madame Tussauds, India may not be interested in David Wright (a baseball star) but will surely be interested in seeing a Hrithik Roshan or a Bhagat Singh.” Talking about the investments, Khan avers, “The Mumbai project will involve a minimum capex of Rs.100 million.” Surely with increasing disposable income and a forecasted 10% increase in tourism forecasted by Elixir Web Solution’s Tourism Study 2007, Bobby’s wax dreams surely are worth their weight in gold.

And yes, talking of consumer choices, you have one now – go to them or wait till they come to your country. We’ll wait a couple of years. Will you?
