something that is not exactly associated with the mainstream Bollywood products!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Directors too have their special takes on this issue. Feroz Khan (Director Gandhi, My Father) believes it is because “One fine day they wake up and realize that beyond their clichéd, ghisa-pita filmy stuff, there are loads of people who connect with it. They deal, in an entertaining and engaging fashion with stories that celebrate the little joys of life, powered by values like truth and reality. They realize too… that in the end, it’s not glamour, fame and box office that endures – but respect, honour and prestige.” Leena Yadav (Director, Shabd) adds her own spin, “C’mon ya, who doesn’t want to do roles to die for? Real/Parallel cinema offers stars just that. Presenting them both a challenge and an opportunity. Having tasted glamour and fame, they usually grab these roles and guess what? Frequently they surprise themselves with performances they never imagined they could unleash …” John Mathew Mathan (Director, Sarfarosh) agrees, “I think it has to do primarily with the director-actor trust. This has to be mutual and is non-negotiable. Stars have to be cautious because the whole world wants to exploit them. Once that confidence is established – half the battle is won.”

Rituparno Ghosh, (Director, The Last Lear) seemed the most appropriate person to have the last words… And he doesn’t let the team down. “Stars are not the dumbos they are (wrongly) made out to be. They have a sixth sense and are hungry for roles that allow them to demonstrate their worth. However, it calls for a special kind of sensitivity and sensibility to encourage them to let go … without scaring or humiliating them or making them feel insecure and foolish. They are an extraordinarily vulnerable bunch, always in the public eye, judged, celebrated or trashed every Friday! You have to love them, nurture them, protect them, build self-confidence and self-belief … and then, watch them fly. Trust me, I know what I am talking about!” And so the affair continues to take on dynamic momentum …

there is nothing in law that has been stated related to HIV.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Anil, who has interacted with many positive people to date by virtue of his work, however advocates transparency but thinks it might require the compulsion of law for many. Mrs. Salvi opines, “Let the couple go to the lab to get the tests done together and go to collect the reports together too but they must get tested. It may save some innocent lives and even help someone know about their status before it gets too late”, as it was in her case, having contracted the infection from her husband.

In India, there is nothing in law that has been stated related to HIV. The provision ‘consent for marriage’ calls for disclosing all facts relevant to marriage and thus could indirectly include HIV as ‘important information’ to be disclosed at the time of marriage, lest the marriage be considered void. Making another law may not guarantee improvement in the situation. If only the government guarantees treatment, and enacts laws against discrimination to reduce the stigma that still rules the society, would people overcome their fear of being lonely forever and volunteer to get tested – not just before marriage but even afterwards…

Miley Stewart or Hannah Montana?

Miley Cyrus is all set to go ‘real’ quite literally as she is truly fascinated by MTV’s "The Real World", which has seven strangers living together for several months while the cameras follow them throughout, and Miley wants to now taste this side of the world. But after her controversial semi-nude pictures for a leading magazine, this "Bolt" star should definitely think twice before jumping into a venture whose success is usually determined by the amount of gossip that it churns out, or be ready for apologising an umpteen number of times!

Ishant emerging real bowler

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

This is reference to your article “Strike Force India” by Tareque Laskar (Nov17-23). The arrival of Ishant Sharma in the Indian cricket team has added new dimensions to the pace-bowling squad .However, it’s too premature to glorify his abilities with pompous epithets. It’s true that Indian team has always been devoid of real pace bowlers. The likes of Kapil Dev, Manoj Prabhakar and Chetan Sharma, to name a few, have rarely appeared in the Indian team at regular intervals. A glimpse into the career graph of a famous pace bowlers show that injuries have always acted as a spoilsport. The ability of a pace bowler to rise above injuries. Going by that standard, Ishant Sharma has to cover a long distance before being hailed as a real fast bowler.

Chris Rehberg shares the results of his quest for the elusive Thylacine...

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

To catch a Tasmanian tiger!

In South Australia, in the late 1960s, there were a spate of sightings as farming land was opened up in the south-east of that state. Then, in 1973, some of the most intriguing film footage was captured of an animal running through a camp-ground with a gait that can only be described as inelegant. If only there were film footage from the 1930s of a running thylacine to make a comparison!

Moving east, Victoria too has its share of sightings with one report suggesting sightings of up to 63 tigers in a state park merely 25km from the capital city. In New South Wales there seems to be a hot-spot on the far north coast with details of 50 sightings being published recently. In 1995, intriguing film footage was again captured, this time in Queensland. This film, together with the 1973 footage from South Australia, is for me the most tangible evidence of Tasmanian tigers alive on the mainland today. The 1990s also heard reports of tigers living in remote regions of Irian Jaya, Indonesia.

In 2005, German tourists Klaus Emmerichs and Birgit Jansen captured two digital photographs they claim show a live Tasmanian tiger. Skeptics quickly dismissed the photos, stating that they were almost identical to a photograph taken in the 1930s. However, these photos became a turning point in my search for the Tasmanian tiger. Having two photos meant that you could build a three dimensional model of the scene being photographed. It would have to be a very clever hoax to produce two photos that show a three-dimensional scene consistently; unless, as critics would say, you are photographing a real cardboard cut-out.

Spending countless hours performing measurements and overlays, holding phone calls with Klaus and email discussions with experts, I had to conclude that no photo will be sufficient to prove the thylacine still exists. However, the analysis led to the birth of my website, "Where Light Meets Dark", dedicated to examining evidence for rare fauna.

What began with tiger fever has grown to encompass devils, quolls, wallabies, potoroos – all bizarre both in name and in nature. There are still gems to be found: a rabbit-like marsupial called Gilbert's potoroo was rediscovered after a 115-year absence; Tasmanian devils have turned up – alive and dead – five times during the 1990s and one book presents evidence for Tasmanian tigers alive and well on the mainland in the 1800s. To catch a tiger – on film at least, please!

Conservation: The Wright path

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Belinda Wright, leading lady when it comes to wildlife protection in India and the Executive Director of Wildlife Protection Society of India addresses a few conservation conundrums for TSI

Would tourism have to bail out wildlife today?

Tourism is a double-edged sword. It’s important as a revenue earner and it also helps to expose more people to wildlife and raise awareness for their conservation. But at the same time too much tourism damages and disturbs the wildlife. What we need is some core areas where wild animals can live without human interference.

Will Sariska make it?

I think it will, although the problems it faces, including the large number of pilgrims and villages inside the park, the highways and mining activity, are all serious and require attention. But I think that a lot of people are genuinely trying to save Sariska.

Is it possible to rehabilitate criminal tribes like Pardhis and Bawariyas?

That’s tricky. These tribes are very secretive and almost completely illiterate. They distrust outsiders and one of the few things that they are really good at is hunting wild animals. Although we have been able to convince some of them to become informers, I don’t think they would be willing to change their ways just like that.

Should we allow controlled hunting of some species (as some other countries do), whose numbers are becoming unmanageable?

I don’t believe we need to emulate that. We are faltering in our conservation and anti-poaching efforts as it is and if we allow hunting, however controlled, it has a very good chance of spiraling out of control. I think we should stick to compensation and relocation to manage large numbers China is the biggest market for illegal animal products from the world over. Is there anything that we can do?

We can certainly apply a lot more diplomatic pressure and increase vigilance. But the fact remains that China represents a very real danger to India’s wildlife.

Swan song of the marshes

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

There's more to wetlands than just water. K S Gopi Sundar, Research Associate (India), International Crane Foundation, tells us why we need to preserve our wetland wealth.

Human civilisation began on river banks and on the shores of large inland lakes. The high soil fertility and a reliable annual cycle of flooding and drying made these areas ideal for planting crops and settling down. Wetlands have been responsible in creating modern human civilisation as we know it today. Shallow water, strong seasonality, and highly productive – these are the three primary traits that characterise wetlands. More than two-thirds of the world’s vertebrate wildlife depends on wetlands at some point in their life cycle. Many flowers like the lotus and animals like frogs and dragonflies are found only in wetland areas. Wetlands therefore are exceedingly important repositories of biodiversity. In this feature, I celebrate the values of wetlands to humans and wildlife alike, and the need to conserve and restore them.

Human use

Shallow waterbodies that have water only during and immediately after the monsoon are maintained as common lands. The amount of productivity of grass, lotus and other vegetation in these shallow areas is incredible. Common lands are therefore used to graze cattle, harvest lotus for food, reeds for thatching, and silt to fertilise agricultural fields. Ponds, lakes, and similar wetlands, with water throughout the year provide a range of values for humans. Common methods of utilising these are as fish ponds, areas to cultivate water chestnut, or to retain water during the dry season that is used to cultivate crops during the dry summer. Even today, majority of the rural human population in several areas in India are dependent on wetlands. The Gangetic flood plains is one example of an area where people cannot survive without wetlands and therefore require them throughout the year.

Munnabhai 3… Nah!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

It could have been a documentary with a social message but then “” is just a half baked film. Despite a half decent concept, it changes gear from talking about today’s harsh realities of the debt culture to hilariously implausible Bollywood fiction. The story revolves around four individuals caught in the vicious debt trap of EMIs just to fulfill their short term desires.

Ryan (Arjun Rampal), a DJ at a nightclub, buys loads of credit cards to maintain a lavish lifestyle; Anil and Shilpa (Ashish Chaudhary and Neha Uberoi) take loans to fund their wedding, house, and honeymoon; Chandrakant (Kulbushan Kharbanada) takes a loan for his teenage son’s foreign education and Prerna (Urmila Matondkar) takes a loan to manipulate the case of her husband’s suicide to claim insurance cover.

Having been fiscally profligate, all of them default on their monthly installments and thus their bank hires Sattar Bhai’s (Sanjay Dutt) recovery agency to get their money back. However, after meeting Prerna, the goon in Sattar Bhai vanishes and he suddenly embraces the good ol’ Munnabhai mould. Rather than thrashing the defaulters into repaying the money, he helps them solve their problems.

It seems that after “Munnabhai MBBS” and “Lage Raho...”, Sanjay Dutt is stuck with the bhai image. Undoubtedly no one in the industry can be a better bhai than Sanju Baba but this time it just turns out to be quite trite. Arjun Rampal, after being solid in “OSO” and “Rock On”, disappoints, Malaika Arora Khan is best as a glorified dancer and is just about okay in terms of acting and Urmila doesn’t offer much to comment about. The first half is passable fare but the movie loses pace thereafter and moves from reality to a world of its own. Dialogues like “Are you sure?” No, I’m Arjun!” are mundane and make you cringe and say “No, Thank You” for this movie.

My Long-Lasting Bond With 007

IIPM Ranked No1 B-School in India

Roger Moore, who played James Bond in more films than any other actor, reflects on the good ol' days…

Ever since the title of the latest James Bond adventure was announced, there has been much talk about what it means. Some have pointed out that "Quantum of Solace" is the name of a short story in Ian Fleming's book "For Your Eyes Only." Michael G Wilson, the film's producer, has said, it means "a measure of comfort."

I have to admit that the title worries me somewhat, as it no doubt did the lyricist charged with penning the title song. Music always plays a big part in Bond films – from the opening "gun barrel" sequence, featuring Monty Norman's "James Bond Theme," – to the incidental music and title song. Having masqueraded as 007 in seven Bond films – all with memorable theme songs – I would have liked a simpler and more "singable" title for this new epic.

I have not yet seen "Quantum of Solace", which opens in the UK on October 31, so I'm not sure how the title plays into the film. (Though I do know that it is not incorporated into the theme song, "Another Way to Die." I checked !) I did see Daniel Craig's first Bond adventure, "Casino Royale," and I thought he was terrific. Had I been asked to perform even a few of the stunts he executed, I would have most certainly been hospitalised.

I actually was injured on my own first outing as Jimmy Bond in "Live and Let Die" while filming the big jet-boat chase. During a practice run, I was trying to make a quick turn when the engine cut out, leaving me with no steering. I continued in a straight line ... right into a wooden boathouse. On impact, I flew out of the boat and hit a wall, cracking my front teeth and twisting my knee badly.

I needed a cane for days afterward. Fortunately, most of the scenes at that time involved me sitting in the boat. There I was, a fearless 007, hobbling on a cane to my boat and then pretending to be indestructible on camera. Who says I can't act?

Making "Live and Let Die" started me thinking about titles and title songs. "Live and Let Die" is a rather easy-to-remember play on words. And it's not unfriendly to a lyricist either as Paul McCartney proved when he wrote the song and performed it with Wings.

Though when George Martin, who orchestrated and produced the track, played it for Harry Saltzman, the film's producer, Saltzman looked up, grumbled and said, "OK, but who can we get to sing it?"

Martin looked, rather incredulously, at Saltzman. "But you already have the world's biggest recording star singing it!"

My second outing was "The Man With the Golden Gun," for which Don Black created a wonderful lyric setting up the villain Scaramanga as charging "a million a shot" to assassinate a target. With music by John Barry and sung by Lulu, it was a punchy and very appropriate top and tail to the movie. That's the thing about Bond songs: When matched to Maurice Binder's wonderful title designs, they tell a bit of the story. One story Ian Fleming did not want to be told on screen was "The Spy Who Loved Me." He wrote the novel through the eyes of a female Russian agent, as opposed to Jim Bond, and reportedly hated it. He therefore stipulated that only the title could ever be used in a film.
