Divender Kishore, Marketing Director, Nokia informs, “Nokia currently has 30 handsets, which are 3G enabled as we are all set for the future.”

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

HTC is pretty excited about the future as it feels that worldwide, its strength has been in delivering 3G handsets and once 3G comes to India, HTC will have an advantage. But competitors like Nokia start off with the compelling advantage of scale as well as market intelligence. Divender Kishore, Marketing Director, Nokia informs, “Nokia currently has 30 handsets, which are 3G enabled as we are all set for the future.” On the contrary HTC, which claims 3G to be its pillar of support currently has only three handset models – Touch Dual, Tytn II & Touch Cruise – which are 3G ready. HTC is waiting with bated breath for the launch of 3G, after which, it plans to get in as many as 7-8 new models for the Indian customers. Yet, it might stand to lose customers who would be looking to buy a 3G-enabled phone in the next six-eight months.

Another important factor about HTC has been the partnership that it has formed with its vendors like Microsoft and this partnership has enabled the company to offer highly advanced office features on the handset. “HTC currently stands to be a part of the paradigm shift in mobile phones with its partnership with Google, which would definitely help in making this handset maker something to watch out for,” informs Makhani. This move also shows how HTC has been keen to move with the changing times and offer its patrons the best in the technological space. The tie up with Google is the primary factor that works in HTC’s favour. It’s perhaps the most compelling reason why everyone’s talking about HTC. What is needed is an aggressive push to make all that buzz translate into robust market share gains.

Bechara Bajaj? Bajaj had clocked sales of about 250,000 units. That’s an astonishing 35% fall.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Bajaj Auto is in a quandary of sorts. While the financial meltdown has affected almost every other auto major, this two-wheeler major’s cup of woes perhaps runs deeper. A 4Ps B&M Insight...

A while back, Rajiv Bajaj had talked to 4Ps B&M and made a forecast that should have sent a chill down the spine of Pankaj Munjal. His famous (neither first, nor last) words were: “Presently 61% of motorcycle volumes come from the 100cc segment and we feel that this segment will reduce to 25% in the next few years.” During that interaction, Rajiv Bajaj, who has an M.S. from Warwick University, had also talked about how the low margins in the entry level 100cc motorcycles were not worth the production and marketing effort. We presume he must have discussed this grand strategy with his brother Sanjiv Bajaj who now handles the financial services arm of the Bajaj Empire. What we really don’t know is if Sanjiv talked to Rajiv about what they don’t teach at Harvard Business School (Sanjiv is an alumnus of Harvard). We also presume Pankaj Munjal was convinced there was no chill running down his spine.

In fact, the message that the market has now sent Rajiv is quite spine chilling. In October 2008, Bajaj Auto notched up two wheeler sales of about 160,000 units. Last year in October, Bajaj had clocked sales of about 250,000 units. That’s an astonishing 35% fall. Sure, these are bad times and India Inc. is being hounded and haunted by the repercussions of the global financial meltdown. Sure even rival Hero Honda and Pankaj Munjal have been affected badly. How badly? Sales in October 2008 for Hero Honda are just 3.5% down at about 365,000 units as compared to last year. Yes! It is 35% versus 3.5%. In fact, combined sales of Bajaj and the number three TVS last October were higher than that of Hero Honda. This year, Hero Honda has sold more than the two put together.

Not that head honchos at Hero Honda are doing cartwheels in jubilation. They too are worried. According to Anil Dua, SVP (Marketing & Sales), Hero Honda Motors, “With the festive season being over now, we do expect to see a slowdown in the industry with the prevailing credit squeeze and interest rates taking their toll on consumer sentiments. Keeping this in mind, we have consciously restricted our dispatch sales in October.”

Rs.70 million for BIG 70 mm, "This is by far the largest re-branding campaign that has happened in India for any entertainment company.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Will the BIG strategy for BIG Cinemas, work now that it has officially entered the BIG league? 4Ps B&M's Surbhi Chawla explores

The Anil Dirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) has chosen the auspicious occasion of Diwali to rechristen their Adlabs Cinemas as Big Cinemas. The basic idea behind this name change is that all the media and entertainment businesses of ADAG were functioning under the umbrella of brand ‘BIG’. Adlabs was the only exception and this move would change that too. But this was no ordinary name change. The company embarked on a huge media exercise to convey this to the unsuspecting consumers. A big budget 360 degree campaign was planned out for which ADAG plans to shell out a mammoth Rs.70 million. "This is by far the largest re-branding campaign that has happened in India for any entertainment company. In the days to come we would be looking at investing at least Rs.60 - 70 million in a 360 degree campaign, comprising of print, TV, OOH, radio, et al. Through the campaigns we would also communicate our new base line – 'Ab Bada Maza Aayega,'" Tushar Dhingra, COO, BIG Cinemas informed 4Ps B&M.

For the uninitiated, it was in June 2005 that ADAG has acquired a majority share in the cinema screening business of Manmohan Shetty-owned Adlabs. At that time Adlabs had only five properties and 20 screens. Three years hence, BIG Cinemas boasts of 73 properties across the country, with 186 screens and a seating capacity of 71,000. One of the key strategies that BIG Cinemas has adopted to grow at this stupendous speed was to rely on both inorganic & organic route to add more cinema screens to its kitty. One such acquisition was that of Rave Entertainment (a JVbetween Kothari group and Jagran) in 2007, which at that time had an operational multiplex in Kanpur and six others under construction in Punjab, Haryana & Uttar Pradesh. This acquisition gave BIG Cinemas a major boost in North India with quick access to the Delhi-UP territory, which contributes a sizeable percentage to the all-India box-office. This move also helped this multiplex operator to add 23 more screens in its basket and enabled it to become the first cinema chain in India to cross the milestone of 100 screens. Dhingra elaborates, “We have been very successful in identifying existing cinemas in smaller towns and branding them and operating them as per BIG Cinemas’ international standards, while giving customers value for money. The latter, especially, has been able to catapult us to becoming India's largest and fastest growing cinema chain by far and has given us a wider reach than anyone else in the country.” Going forward BIG Cinemas plans to chart a similar route of mixing organic and inorganic expansion to add more screens and capacity.

MONOJIT LAHIRI checks-out with the Adfrat, The flamboyant Dorian Grey (or is it Dev Anand?!) of Indian advertising signs off with style.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Has Our Big Bang At Cannes Rocketed Us To The Global Arena?

Alyque Padamsee agrees. “Without meaning to be a kill-joy or Devil’s Advocate, I have to say that this hoo-haa shouldn’t be taken with a pinch of salt!” The revered ad-guru believes that to be actually perceived, recognised and respected as a creative powerhouse, a country has to have at least ten ad agencies consistently producing cutting-edge stuff, time and time again. UK is a classic case in point. “Otherwise you are nothing more than a hyped, glamorous, flavour-of-the-day! Brazil, Spain, Australia, Japan … all these countries, at some point or other, were huge, but where are they now? Incidentally Americans aren’t too enamoured by Cannes. They view it, as an European event. For them, ONE SHOW, D&AD, CLIO, MOBILIS .. appear hotter.” The flamboyant Dorian Grey (or is it Dev Anand?!) of Indian advertising signs off with style. “At the end of the day, while being jubilant and energised about the success is fine, we must decide whether we are looking for Sprinters … or Marathon men?” The red-hot ad-land – Bollywood star Prasoon Joshi refuses to enter the fray and strikes a benign, Buddha-like pose. “Why are we always chasing labels, arrivals and departures? Has India arrived? There must be a zillion personal takes. For me, its important to enjoy this awesome journey instead of doing a paralysis through analysis! We have definitely covered significant distance and are poised to cover lots more. Lets – individually and collectively – try and contribute as much as possible to take this forward instead of hysterically trying to play judge & jury!”

TBWA’s big daddy George John warmly congratulates all the winners and believes, “it can only act as a terrific confidence-booster to set our sights even higher. Regarding going over-board, lets not play spoil-sport and rain on their parade. Savour it…” Sushil Pandit of THE HIVES adds his own spin to it. “For quite some time now, we have been doing excellent work – both in the area of ideas and execution – that has moved our markets, consumers and brands. The trend continues. The difference is that this time, it resonated there as well! If Cannes acknowledged and rewarded our stuff … then yes, it happened this time.” Pandit is convinced that the dramatic zoom in our fortunes have occurred largely due to the fact that “we have learnt to intelligently leverage the processes of Cannes … context stuff that works with these guys.” Hence to the question of whether India has finally arrived at Cannes, the answer is: ‘yes’. To the (bigger) question whether India has (generally) arrived, the answer has to be: Long Time Back!” Dentsu’s Gulu Sen agrees. “The buzz has been around for some years now, but with this, we’ve actually struck ‘big’! It’s a lot like the Olympic gold! And the Grand Prix for the brilliant Lead India campaign was most appropriate. It was a magical combination of passion, purposes and perspective.”

Back from the dead, the human species that became extinct 28,000 years ago.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

This is the closest encounter with the Neanderthals

The lady on the page looks like an angry wrestler, but she’s no wrestler, rather its the picture of Wilma, named after the red-headed character from the Flintstones cartoon. Scientists in Washington along with artists, have created this first model of a Neanderthal: the human species that became extinct 28,000 years ago. The model was based on facts from fossil anatomy and ancient DNA of 43,000 year-old bones that had been cannibalised. The fossils also imply that at least some Neanderthals would have had red hair, freckles and pale skin. The reconstruction was made from replicas of pelvis and skull bones from Neanderthal females, while bones of the males were resized to female proportions to fill the gaps. “This is the first time that anthropologists have gone beyond the fossils and looked closely at the actual genes of extinct species of humans,” says Jamie Shreeve National Geographic’s Senior Science Editor, who supervised the project. She further says, “We saw an opportunity to literally embody this new science in a full-size Neanderthal female, reconstructed using the latest information from genetics, fossil evidence, and archaeology.” The species that lived in Europe, Central Asia and Middle East for more than 2,00,000 years faded away in the Ice Age, while our modern human ancestors survived. The extinction of Neanderthals is one of the greatest mysteries in all of human prehistory which has left behind a lot of questions, unanswered.

Though espionage isn’t a new concept, counter espionage took it to a new level.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

The Cold War era saw two other developments, which brought a marked change in the way war would henceforth be fought. Realising the fact that information on enemy is key to the result of any eventual war, the Americans gave major stress to the creation of long range reconnaissance aircraft, which could fly at very high altitude and would take high resolution photographs of enemy installations and then fly back safely without being noticed. In came from the Lockheed Martin stable the U-2 aircraft, which could fly at an incredible 70,000 ft. and comfortably take photographs. In fact, it was a U-2 from the coveted 4080th Strategic Recon Wing of the US Air Force, which had first located the nuclear arming of Soviet missiles in Cuba, which almost had the two warring blocs on the verge of an apocalyptic war. Information from that stage onwards became so critical for US that U-2 was bettered by the SR-71, which in its own way was an engineering masterpiece. Made of Titanium, this gem of engineering was also the first of its own kind in which the stealth technology for reduced emissions and detection possibility was introduced.

Flying at a speed above Mach-3, it stretched engineering to its limit to keep the pilot safe and healthy, but soon found company in the Russian made nuclear interceptor Mig 25 with a similar reconnaissance capability and speed of Mach-3. But the high rate of accidents of SR-71 forced the Americans to start working more on satellite based reconnaissance, which was in place from as early as late 1950s but got major prominence since the 1990s. From the sky nowadays, even a single 9mm bullet can be photographed with such clarity that it can put to shame any professional photographer. If US has the Keyhole series, Israel has Tecsar, while Russia has the Zenit and Yantar. To compliment this came the concept of organised espionage; and organisations like CIA, Mossad, KGB became household names. Defections & moles became norms and what couldn’t be achieved through negotiations or open wars was being settled through secret killings. Though espionage isn’t a new concept, counter espionage took it to a new level.

If information caught the imagination of Cold War, the other was invariably the delivery mechanism. Both US and USSR was gradually trying to reduce their dependence on long range bombers and develop instead long range missiles. In came the era of ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. In fact, advent of Inter Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM), the Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) or the Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) with almost all of them being nuclear capable, brought with them the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction or MAD. In other words, such became the level of armament in the hands of each that in case of a war there would not be any genuine winner as the ensuing apocalypse unleashed by the series of ICBMs from both sides would ensure the decimation of both the victor and the victim. This doctrine of MAD kept at bay both the US and USSR from going out for a full fledged war. But it couldn’t stop the development of further and more lethal weapons. So while US created its own series of ICBMs, namely, the Atlas series, the Titan, the Minuteman followed by Polaris and the very latest Polaris range of Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile, erstwhile USSR and now Russia has worked on the Semyorka (R7), Desna (R-9), SS-7 Saddler, SS-9 Scarp, the Satan, the RS-24 MIRV(Multiple Independent Re-entry Vehicle) and the Topol series of ICBMs. Later, China, India, and Israel, all have worked on ballistic missiles for using it as a deterrent. Thus, it became the weapon to ensure the prevention of a war, more than one to create one...

Dinner with Hillary?

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

And much more! Despite Obama’s call, lobbyists will thrive in the US

If this doesn’t prove why Obama will be unsuccessful against lobbyists, then nothing will. When US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton introduced Richard Holbrooke as the special envoy for South Asia, both were expected to spout fire on Pakistan on the terrorism issue, and consequently, also were necessarily supposed to mention India and the Kashmir issue in their most important introductory press briefs. But India didn’t want the Kashmir issue to be discussed by Holbrooke, especially on the same platform as a discussion on Pakistan. Guess what! India and Kashmir were as absent from their well decorated press briefs as a live turkey from the White House. Experts confidently whisper about India’s ‘lobbying’ prowess as being the key.

Traditionally, a lobbyist is defined as a person who tries to influence legislation in favour of a group interest. In spite of criticism, the American democracy has given a special focus on lobbying by passing resolutions to protect the interests of specific moneyed individuals [eg. Saudi King Abdullah], groups [eg. tobacco companies] and communities [eg. Jews] in mind since 1995. Since then, lobbying has also joined the club of a profitable industry. According to Center for Congressional and Presidential studies, America spent around $2.13 billion on lobbying in 2004 alone and there currently are as many as 1,50,000 people involved in the industry. And the malaise, if you can call it that, is not limited to corporations. The Center for Public Integrity reveals that over 300 universities have spent over $132 million in the last six years while 1,400 local governments have spent $357 million to seek favours from the government. Europe witnessed the emergence of lobbying as early as 1979 during the first European parliamentary election. In Brussels alone, there are 1,400 lobbyists and over 2,600 ‘special interest groups’. The legal lobbying industry in UK is estimated to be worth $1.9 billion, employing over 14,000 people – in fact, a few MPs are often approached [read ‘physically spammed’] more than a hundred times per week by lobbyists. With time, lobbying has expanded its roots across borders.

In return, the Chinese citizen was expected to remain content with one party Communist rule in the country.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

In fact, despite the rigid censorship and control of media in China, hundreds of reports are coming out every day about export oriented factories shutting shop and workers losing their jobs and livelihoods. The estimates of jobs already lost in the export driven manufacturing sector range from a very conservative 10 million to a more realistic 20 million. Experts reckon that more than 20 million workers are going back to their native villages as job prospects recede in the once booming towns of coastal and central China. Are these tens of millions of Chinese citizens going to keep quiet and stoically accept the leadership of the Communist Party?

That’s the fear that is haunting the ruling party bosses in China. Sure, they were able to successfully crush the pro-democracy movement of 1989 and conclude an almost Faustian bargain with the Chinese citizens and middle classes. The bargain was simple: the State will deliver dizzying rates of GDP growth year after year along with increased prosperity and economic mobility and freedom. In return, the Chinese citizen was expected to remain content with one party Communist rule in the country. For a good 20 years, this bargain has worked spectacularly well as the Chinese economy has grown consistently at double digit rates for decades. But as a torrent of even ‘censored’ and controlled data that is coming out of China indicates, the good times are over – just as the economy faced a severe downturn in 1989 and people lost jobs by the hundreds of thousands. In fact, Communist party bosses have openly admitted that it is imperative for China to grow at a minimum of 8% per year to fulfil the economic aspirations of citizens and divert their attention from difficult decisions like political freedom. Many analysts have marvelled at how middle class Chinese have been content to keep their political thoughts to themselves and concentrate on making money. But now that money making may become a closed option, there is little doubt that dissatisfaction and unrest will grow.

The Hitch before ‘the Hitch’ – story I

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Chee (definitely not short for Cheesy) is 27, and one of the sweetest and prettiest people I know. Pea (short for who knows what) is 26; tall and well built with a smelly-as-old-socks kinda locker room humour. And both their lives are as barren as a grain of sand. There’s a difference though… Choosy Chee’s life is like a grain of sand from the parched Sahara, where no one goes and er… no one comes. Most of the men in her universe might be grovelling at her feet but she usually looks at them the way you might at dead flies caught in a restaurant’s bug zapper… with a mixture of pity and disgust. Chee just isn’t happy with what she has and doesn’t know how to get what she wants… her problem? She’s the right course in the wrong restaurant …

On the other hand, Pea has the opposite problem. His life is like a grain of sand from a beach, often flooded and at times crowded, but barren nevertheless, because neither the waters, nor the people ever stay back… and yeah, he does get trod upon a fair bit too. His problem? He is looking at the wrong course in the right restaurant… Allow me to explain. I believe that as far as compatibility in relationships is concerned, people are like meal-courses, and if you get greedy or cheap and don’t order the right course, you’ll either throw up (fall out) or have to live with chronic dysentery (a bad painful marriage) all your life.

Here’s how this works… Chee’s always been a ‘good girl’. She knew the rules, studied hard, did the ‘right’ things, returned home before dark and didn’t get stoned. People liked her and she stayed out of trouble; she was giving and caring and found a similar guy who’s reliable at home and work. Nothing could go wrong with her life. Now that’s a simple, uncomplicated one-course person – not too many layers, nothing unpredictable and her whole life smells of wholesome goodness. So, what went wrong? Well, it’s that monster that waylays every relationship – evolution. Of course, its old hat that partners in a relationship evolve, at different paces, in different directions. If partners remain sensitive to each other, they feel the tug as they pull in different directions and get back to some amorous CPR to fortify the bond. But usually, the bonds break even before we realise that we’ve drifted away.

Chee and her ex suffered the same fate. She met some people at work who she had nothing in common with. She was thrown together in a team with these seven-course, multi layered, super complicated people who she’d perhaps have never said more than a ‘hello’ to if they didn’t have to work together. Given time and human nature, they became good friends. One of her colleagues, let’s call him ‘The Rajput’, is a real dasher. He loves trekking, riding and women, and if nothing else, is brilliant at talking about them, with a smile that could charm Medusa. And so what if he can’t sing; he sure can cook. Now I’ve got to admit, while single-course guys, like Chee’s ex, lets call him pizza’, are reliable and caring individuals, they just can’t match these multi course exotic platters like our ‘Rajput’ in terms of charisma and persona.
