Do not dwell on the past. I had contact with Muthalik but the comparison would not be applicable now. I’m again elucidating that neither we nor Bharatiya Janatha Parivara has anything to do with them. In the recently held Assembly elections in Karnataka, they stood against us. The incident is shocking and Muthalik’s scandalous behaviour is condemnable. Who are they to take law in their own hands or attack women?

Banning Sri Rama Sene is not the ultimate remedy, you have said. But in Karnataka there are various groups infamous for hooliganism and people are anxious. So, by banning a group, why don’t you send a strong message to them?

I’m not going to ban Sri Rama Sena. It is rather more important to implement restrictions and take sturdy actions. I have done the same in the Mangalore incident. Banning is not the solution, but if it becomes indispensable, I will surely reconsider that.

Most of the times, in the case of law and order in Karnataka, Acharya’s and yours statements were contradictor.Do you people lack coordination? No. We never gave contradictory statements. We always put forward the truth in the front of media and the people.

Then what would you say on the various differing statements published in the media?

It’s pure misconception.

Why a party of Muslims only?

The time has come for Muslims to form their own party because they will not achieve their political objectives by depending on other parties. Our party will not only raise the Muslim issues but will also fight for the rights of the oppressed and marginalised people. Muslim vote for now is scattered and there is a need to unite it under a banner.

How many states do you intend to contest?

Our party will fight parliamentary elections in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Maharashtra and Assam. In order to get rid of rising political crisis in the country, the Muslims should be ready to get political rights at the national level. AUDF will play a leading and important role in this concern. Right now it is not possible to register the party as a national party in the election commission, therefore, AUDF will contest elections in different states and later, it will be formed as an all India party.

Will AUDF ally with Congress in other states when in Assam it fought against the Congress?

Assam has a different set of problems. We can not link it to other states. Our party will never have an alliance with the BJP but we are ready to fight elections along with other secular and democratic forces.

“The air distance between Bhopal to Bangalore and Chennai is almost similar, i.e. 1020 kms. So, we pit our pigeons against those of the Tamil Nadu Club. It is the first time our pigeons will commute such a great distance,” says Chellaiah, Secretary, KRPC. Lest the enthusiasm of the members brimmeth over, only 25 pigeons belonging to KRPC have been allowed to participate in the Bhopal race. The race categories are ‘Young Derby’, ‘Open Bird’, and ‘Derby Bird’. While Young Derby provides stage for debut entrants, the veterans and previous year winners are allowed to participate in Open Bird. In Derby Bird, only one pigeon per member can participate.

After the contestant pigeons reach ‘finish line’ – that is fly back in to their respective lofts – the time is noted by the official in the owner’s house. The bird clocking the highest velocity – distance divided by time – is the winner. Advanced GPS technology is deployed to measure the distance and time taken. Pigeons have traveled 700 kms (from Nanded to Bangalore) in 11 hours – faster than the Indian ‘express’ trains! Explaining the remarkable ability, pigeon specialist KP Ramprasad says, “By sensing the geomagnetic fields and the movement of sun, pigeons tend to trace their way.”

In places like Barcelona, and Perpignan (southern France), pigeon racing enjoys great patronage. But in India, the government’s import policy on foreign breeds forces the pigeon fanciers to bank on indigenous breed or ‘homers’. This year’s Nanded race was won by KRPC member Krishnamurthy’s pigeon, having traversed the distance in 14 hours! The next to romp home was only 25 minutes off the mark. Before one could wonder if any of this be cruel, Rohan, another KRPC member clarifies, “There is no question. Flying for 12 to 13 hours is common; some birds can even travel from continent to continent. Flying is better than being caged in. Besides the bamboo boxes are also very spacious and comfortable.” “The Indian Wildlife Act does not bar feeding, training and domesticating pigeons; those are falcons and other type of birds. And till date no wildlife activists or animal clubs have objected to the race,” adds Prabhu. Certainly a consolation and an achievement, this sport..

Your cover story on a few handful of politicians of character and vision (TSI, Jan 19-25) will surely bring back our lost confidence in the Indian polity. It's enough testimony to the fact that there are strong exceptions to our frequent 'Transparency International' ratings and to the earlier promulgation that 'corruption is a global phenomenon'. It's ironic that despite being the world's largest democracy with such skilled manpower, we are lagging behind because of the lack of political will. Corruption and red tapism in our country has gone to such an extent that the MPs charge even for the questions to be raised in the Parliament. Let's hope that these 'ambassadors of democracy' work hard towards the peace and development of the country and set a model for their fellow companions.

Forged documents tumble out of Nadar's closet

The latest allegation that Neelalohithadasa Nadar, former Kerala minister in EK Nayanar's LDF Ministry (1996-2001), had forged papers to ensure acquittal in the Nalini Netto sexual harassment case has given a second life to an old case. The defence lawyers had argued that the former transport secretary, Nalini Netto, IAS, complained of sexual harassment after noticing that some charges and comments in the transfer note could embarrass her. The transfer document was a photocopy of a note dated February 1, 2000, believed to have been sent by Nadar to the Chief Minister, advising that Nalini Netto be transferred from her post. Now, as the case unfolds, allegations are flying thick and fast that the former minister and present BSP state chief Nadar got the court relief with the help of a forged document. Interestingly, it was the former Section Officer in the Transport Department, Vijayakumari Amma, herself who pointed out the discrepancy in the document: it contained her signature while she had joined the department only in May 2000! The document came to Vijayakumari's notice when the Additional Chief Secretary, General Administration Department, issued her a memo seeking an explanation and asking for Netto's transfer order in original. The case arose when Netto accused Nadar of outraging her modesty at his office in the Kerala Legislative Assembly complex on December 21, 1999. Netto had complained directly to the then Chief Minister and CPI(M) politburo member, the late EK Nayanar. Consequently, Nadar lost the ministerial berth within a few days. Thiruvananthapuram First Class Magistrate Court punished him with three months’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000. But, the Fast Track Court acquitted him on July 22, 2008.

Now, the Kerala Government is understood to have referred the matter to the High Court, which is due to consider an appeal against the Thiruvananthapuram Fast Track Court verdict that had acquitted Neelalohithadasa Nadar.

Money would continue to play a crucial role before or after elections

Money is increasingly becoming an indispensable proposition when it comes to influencing voters in election s anywhere in the world. Even in developing countries like India, where fiscal deficit is a norm, a gigantic Rs.10,000 crore is estimated to be spent during the election this time. One wonders what could have been done by this money if at all the political parties were serious about bringing in development.

Researches show that the two highest spenders in election are the US and Canada. While Canada spent over $300 million in 2008, the US spent over $5.3 billion in the 2008 US presidential election. Collectively all parties in the US raised over $1.64 billion while the US President Barack Obama alone had raised $532 million which adds up to $7.39 per vote. And mind you, a large chunk of money raised by Obama was a result of small donations received from Obama’s fans and not from big fat corporate donations. Even Nigerians understood the mystery behind the politics of money and allowed its Stock Exchange to allocate $630,000 to influence the US election. This bluntly ignored the US election rule that prohibits political parties from receiving contributions from abroad. The domestic corporates were not far behind. The McCain campaign finance is a case in point. However there is very little connection between money spent and voters’ turnout. Huge expenditure does not guarantee high turn-out. Even after spending millions of dollars, the Canadian election saw a merely 59% voter turnout in 2008!! Yet collection of donations for election continues to be a major business. For, if not in buying votes during elections, who knows it might help in buying the same in the Parliament after elections are over and results are declared.

As far as Infosys goes, the company’s core strategy has been to focus very passionately on high margin accounts, a strategy that can be credited for its sector beating performance. The other aspect is the adage of not putting all your eggs in one basket, due to which the company is not as badly affected by the BFSI debacle. But the recently announced results for the fourth quarter are not positive for the company and the sector in the long term. Infosys has forecast a yoy revenue decline of 8.2-6.5% under IFRS (which considers exchange rates for major global currencies) for FY 2009-10, which depends heavily on exchange rate trends. The rupee is one basket even Infosys cannot avoid, right? The company would also rue losing Axon to HCL, and should be looking for more such targets in the coming year.

Winners show How to beat the pants off your competition in a downturn...

B&E attempts to bring out some key facets of competition beating business strategy in a slowdown by analysing the strategies of Indian companies that are actually doing better than their competition in their respective industries. In selecting our elite list of companies, we have considered the all important benchmark of profitability, both in terms of absolute figures and yoy growth trends, for the nine months ending December 2008 (till figures are available). Apart from one exception in the real estate sector, we find that all these winning companies have posted double digit growth rates in profitability. Now let us analyse what these winners have done in their respective sectors to shine in the current not-so-bright times.

The telecom leader is clearly Bharti Airtel. TRAI may have given it a thumbs down on network congestion (read more about it in the Corporation on Tata Teleservices in this issue), but the company continues to rule the market in terms of subscriber base at 91.1 million (at the end of February 2009). Sunil Bharti Mittal, CMD, Bharti Airtel Limited, said on the performance, “Bharti Airtel continues to lead the telecom growth story, adding customer and revenue market share despite intense competition. Bharti’s strategy of extensive roll out ahead of competition, especially in new villages, has yielded rich dividends.” What also keeps Bharti in the black is the fact that it has leveraged its pioneering advantage to get the cream of customers, which helps it even as telecom ARPUs in general are going down. Dipesh Mehta, telecom analyst, Khandwala Securities, comments, “ARPUs for the company have fallen for the company like other telecom companies, but they have not fallen drastically.” Moreover, the perception of Bharti of being a quality service provider continues to go heavily in its favour. Years of brand building are now bearing fruit.

The automotive sector, on the other hand, has been decisively lead by two wheeler giant Hero Honda. Pawan Munjal, MD & CEO, Hero Honda Motors Ltd. proudly affirms, “An unprecedented share of over 57% in the domestic motorcycle market particularly when the industry has been witnessing a massive slowdown... is reflective of the strong fundamentals of this company.” Being the market leader in the executive segment definitely has its advantages; more so in the era of discretionary spending; and the company sports some best sellers in this segment like the Splendour and the Passion. New product launches like the 150cc Hunk Premium and variants of the Glamour and the CD Deluxe last year are also doing well for the company. Also, the rural push that the company has made over the years seems to be delivering results now. That’s why Hero Honda is gloating over a 10% increase in sales yoy in March, while key competitor Bajaj reported a decline of 14%.
