Though espionage isn’t a new concept, counter espionage took it to a new level.

The Cold War era saw two other developments, which brought a marked change in the way war would henceforth be fought. Realising the fact that information on enemy is key to the result of any eventual war, the Americans gave major stress to the creation of long range reconnaissance aircraft, which could fly at very high altitude and would take high resolution photographs of enemy installations and then fly back safely without being noticed. In came from the Lockheed Martin stable the U-2 aircraft, which could fly at an incredible 70,000 ft. and comfortably take photographs. In fact, it was a U-2 from the coveted 4080th Strategic Recon Wing of the US Air Force, which had first located the nuclear arming of Soviet missiles in Cuba, which almost had the two warring blocs on the verge of an apocalyptic war. Information from that stage onwards became so critical for US that U-2 was bettered by the SR-71, which in its own way was an engineering masterpiece. Made of Titanium, this gem of engineering was also the first of its own kind in which the stealth technology for reduced emissions and detection possibility was introduced.

Flying at a speed above Mach-3, it stretched engineering to its limit to keep the pilot safe and healthy, but soon found company in the Russian made nuclear interceptor Mig 25 with a similar reconnaissance capability and speed of Mach-3. But the high rate of accidents of SR-71 forced the Americans to start working more on satellite based reconnaissance, which was in place from as early as late 1950s but got major prominence since the 1990s. From the sky nowadays, even a single 9mm bullet can be photographed with such clarity that it can put to shame any professional photographer. If US has the Keyhole series, Israel has Tecsar, while Russia has the Zenit and Yantar. To compliment this came the concept of organised espionage; and organisations like CIA, Mossad, KGB became household names. Defections & moles became norms and what couldn’t be achieved through negotiations or open wars was being settled through secret killings. Though espionage isn’t a new concept, counter espionage took it to a new level.

If information caught the imagination of Cold War, the other was invariably the delivery mechanism. Both US and USSR was gradually trying to reduce their dependence on long range bombers and develop instead long range missiles. In came the era of ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. In fact, advent of Inter Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM), the Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) or the Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) with almost all of them being nuclear capable, brought with them the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction or MAD. In other words, such became the level of armament in the hands of each that in case of a war there would not be any genuine winner as the ensuing apocalypse unleashed by the series of ICBMs from both sides would ensure the decimation of both the victor and the victim. This doctrine of MAD kept at bay both the US and USSR from going out for a full fledged war. But it couldn’t stop the development of further and more lethal weapons. So while US created its own series of ICBMs, namely, the Atlas series, the Titan, the Minuteman followed by Polaris and the very latest Polaris range of Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile, erstwhile USSR and now Russia has worked on the Semyorka (R7), Desna (R-9), SS-7 Saddler, SS-9 Scarp, the Satan, the RS-24 MIRV(Multiple Independent Re-entry Vehicle) and the Topol series of ICBMs. Later, China, India, and Israel, all have worked on ballistic missiles for using it as a deterrent. Thus, it became the weapon to ensure the prevention of a war, more than one to create one...
