This is the closest encounter with the Neanderthals

The lady on the page looks like an angry wrestler, but she’s no wrestler, rather its the picture of Wilma, named after the red-headed character from the Flintstones cartoon. Scientists in Washington along with artists, have created this first model of a Neanderthal: the human species that became extinct 28,000 years ago. The model was based on facts from fossil anatomy and ancient DNA of 43,000 year-old bones that had been cannibalised. The fossils also imply that at least some Neanderthals would have had red hair, freckles and pale skin. The reconstruction was made from replicas of pelvis and skull bones from Neanderthal females, while bones of the males were resized to female proportions to fill the gaps. “This is the first time that anthropologists have gone beyond the fossils and looked closely at the actual genes of extinct species of humans,” says Jamie Shreeve National Geographic’s Senior Science Editor, who supervised the project. She further says, “We saw an opportunity to literally embody this new science in a full-size Neanderthal female, reconstructed using the latest information from genetics, fossil evidence, and archaeology.” The species that lived in Europe, Central Asia and Middle East for more than 2,00,000 years faded away in the Ice Age, while our modern human ancestors survived. The extinction of Neanderthals is one of the greatest mysteries in all of human prehistory which has left behind a lot of questions, unanswered.
