FISME further estimates the market for PE funding in Indian SMEs to be around $5 billion in the near future.

“These PE players take a long term view towards their investments thus minimising the impact of the current downturn. Moreover, the returns from PE funds have been very strong, and this would entice the investors to make new investments in the future, irrespective of market situations,” explains N. Wadhwa, Director, SKI Capital.

And it’s not just the big names we’re talking about here that are getting global PE sharks hooked onto the ‘high-return’ bait. As per the 2008 report by The Federation of Indian Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises (FISME), PE players led by Avigo Capital Partners and Blue River Capital invested $1 billion in SMEs in 2007-08, an increase of 75% from the previous fiscal. FISME further estimates the market for PE funding in Indian SMEs to be around $5 billion in the near future. “Investment in key sectors like Real Estate, Telecom, Energy et al, by the PEs is likely to give them high returns,” suggests Ashok Jainani, VP, Research & Marketing, Khandwala Securities.

But after all the good news for India, one issue stays – the lock-in period, which will definitely test the patience of a few of these aggressive PEs. But patience we have, and patience they will have to keep... Will they?!

Insurance industry should necessarily come forward to introduce terror covers and that too on an urgent basis...

As terrorist attacks have become more of day-to-day events rather than standalone ones, Indian insurance industry now suddenly faces a major drawback. While the burden of bearing terrorism risk (also the inability to effectively transfer or insure terrorism risk) has begun to hound the business community, no real standalone terror cover is actually available (so far insurers in India sell coverage for terror attacks as an added provision to the general insurance) with the insurers at the moment. Thus the number of business houses covered for terrorist attacks is really low. And the fact became more obvious after the 26/11 incident. While Mumbai suffered a total loss of over Rs.40 billion, as per early industry estimates, the total insured losses amount to a meagre Rs.5 billion. That simply means pity on those people who lost the rest of the amount.

The ‘Terror Insurance Pool’ set (post 9/11) under the aegis of Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) has mandated all general insurance companies be allied to a common pool for terrorism insurance, yet what needs to be understood is the fact that it covers only damage of property and not loss of lives.

Alcohol is another agent, which deserves no social mercy. As per WHO, alcohol causes 1.8 million deaths a year, representing 3.2% of all deaths worldwide. A NSSO Survey reveals that 32% adults in India are currently alcohol users, and around 15% are alcoholics. However, there is a danger associated with banning of alcohol too! Yes, banning alcohol usage will obviously reduce drunk-driven accidents and eventually save many lives, but it will also lead to black marketing of alcohol and alcohol-related products. Take for instance Delhi where liquor smuggling increased by a massive 400% only during the last week of November 2008 (when liquor sale was banned for 3 days) or the case of the 1.8 lakh bottles of liquor ceased in Chandigarh (smuggled from UP), and you’d look no further for proof of alcohol black marketing becoming severe on the ban of its public sale. Worse when it comes to social health, it will encourage purchase of low quality and counterfeit drinks increasing death toll due to the same. We could perhaps start by keeping a closer check on restaurants and outlets, that they do not deal with under aged customers... It is equally true that Purohit picked up the ropes – the contacts and the cloak and dagger – from his days in Military Intelligence (MI) in the Kashmir valley. Officers who have served in the valley in the MI for any length of time are accustomed to arrive at odd conclusions, such is the pressure of the job.

Even more distressing is the charge that the army let Purohit – a serving officer – too easily into the hands of civil police, without a preliminary internal inquiry of its own. “If it is true that the official was handed over without an internal inquiry, then it is very bad for the morale of the force, though frankly I doubt it,” Brig. Rajiv Williams (retd.), told B&E. The army, in virtually every case, makes its own inquiries before arriving at a definitive conclusion. The case against Purohit that he carried 60 kg or RDX may also be difficult to sustain because moving around with so much RDX seized from a terrorist hideout is virtually impossible – it could take several boxes to carry the dynamite. In the absence of any clear cut version of what happened, several questions remain unanswered. Even more preposterous is the charge that some politicians out to settle personal scores may have involved the army. For a country where the politician has been allowed to live in peace by the military, it could give out very disturbing signals.

The Indian animation industry desperately needs some brand recall

Mickey Mouse turned 80 last week amidst much fanfare and celebrations all over the world, including India. In fact, our forever ‘desperate for any news’ news channels used this opportunity to blanket their screens with images of Mickey Mouse’s adventures over the eight decades. However, even after discounting the current over-hyped nature of India’s news media, the fact is that the eponymous mouse has deep resonance for millions of Indians. And although the current generation has a multitude of choices, Mickey Mouse is still capable of eliciting a smile from any child’s (and many adults’) face. But the mouse’s longevity and relevance begs a question, why hasn’t Indian animation industry, with India’s rich cultural and mythological history to mime, been able to come up with somebody remotely approaching the stature of Mickey?

The Indian animation and gaming industry currently achieves a modest turnover of $400 million, but is expected to reach the $1 billion mark by 2010 (although this estimate is likely to be revised downwards as the global economic downturn intensifies). The strength of the industry, as with almost all industries in India, is the cost of labour (it’s been estimated that the cost of making an animation movie in India is 15 times cheaper than the west). With relatively cheap, English speaking, adequately trained professionals being the backbone of Indian animation industry, global animation studios are getting interested. Yash Raj Films’ three picture deal with The Walt Disney Studios, of which the first was Roadside Romeo, and UTV’s $20 million co-production with Overbrook Entertainment are steps in the right direction. Such deals will give access to the studios to state-of-the-art equipment, talent and quality of the US animation industry, which it badly needs.

Various projects under these schemes include watershed development, drought proofing, sanitation and road constructions et al. The fact that 86.7% of rural dwellers choose not to be a part of these temporary jobs puts a question mark on the very efficacy of the state sponsored employment generation rural projects. Incidentally States with huge uneducated and low per capita income population observed higher participation in public works, the highest being in Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Jharkhand. In contrast, Kerala, Punjab and Karnataka, with better record of education and higher per capita income saw lower participations. Truly, the policymakers have to realise that promising a temporary pittance in the name of a ‘daily wage’ no more excites an educated rural youth to work in those public projects. Reason enough for the Centre to create real, permanent job opportunities
