So what if they are even placed in global billionaires’ lists by magazines like Forbes & Fortune? So what if their companies are respected as ‘the best’ in the country? The fact is that when their market capitalisation erodes the way it has in the past few years, a Forbes or a Fortune will not come to the rescue of the ordinary investor who took them this far. Many of them wouldn’t even know what exactly hit them till date.

Every body likes to pass the buck. And hence the foreign institutional investors got quite conveniently blamed. But the question is - what did India Inc. did to stop it… why couldn’t they check the proceedings (outflow of money from the market) that blew off a mind-blowing 61.47% of the market value in less than a year’s time? US meltdown, recession in Europe, credit crunch… accepted. But why couldn’t these ‘guardians’ of public wealth see it coming?

The poorest banker on the richest

My fate was to become world-famous for being unemployed, very different from Mr. Buffett’s fate, almost the opposite. I was born and raised in NYC, attended the prestigious Dalton High School (whose motto is “Go forth unafraid”), and graduated from MIT in 1981 with a B.S. in Management Science from the Sloan School of Management. I had many great professors at MIT, including several Nobel Prize winners, but unfortunately no Graham and Dodd. My professors lost billions of dollars to their investors, and nearly brought the entire financial system to collapse when their hedge fund, Long Term Capital Management failed. I only read Graham and Dodd’s books on value investing much later.

Over the years, I have worked on Wall St. as an assistant options trader, for a satellite communications company in business development, for a commercial bank in asset management (I ran a multi-billion dollar Syndicated Loans Agency for financing wind farms and ships), and for an investment bank producing valuations of illiquid hedge fund investments. At the end of last year, I lost my job. Bad timing. Because of the sub-prime mortgage mess (housing and credit crisis, stock market and economic downturn), the large commercial and investment banks have suffered billions of dollars in losses and laid off tens of thousands of employees. I have not been able to find employment in my field (or in other fields) in over six months. After months of making telephone calls, sending resumes (CVs) over the internet, and networking among family, friends and colleagues, I took to the streets to hand out my resume. I went to 50th St. and Park Avenue put on a poster board saying, “Experienced MIT grad for hire,” and included my contact information. I did not realize that within a week, I would be world-famous.

Alva's statement and resignation may start series of apprehensions

Bowing down to pressures, Congress General Secretary, Margaret Alva finally resigned from her post on November 11, 2008 – five days after she made derogatory remarks about the distribution of party seats during Karnataka Assembly elections. She claimed that the distribution was done on the basis of price one could attach with the seats. She said that the party was selling seats. "People who make guidelines are the ones who are breaking it," she said. The party was quick to react and her name was referred to the Disciplinary Action Committee.

The whole issue started when Alva showed her unhappiness over denial of an election ticket to her son, Nivedith during the recent Karnataka elections. She made the allegations after it became evident that as many as 23 candidates were relatives of senior Congress leaders. The party high command is tight-lipped over the issue, but this kind of events show that there is a gap rising in the party.

Just what we didn’t want; an intellectual Prez!

At least since Adlai Stevenson’s campaigns for presidency in the 1950s, it’s been a disadvantage in US politics to seem too learned. Social critic William Burroughs once bluntly declared that “intellectuals are deviants in US” (After one of Adlai’s high-brow speeches, an admirer yelled out, “You’ll have the vote of every thinking American!” Stevenson is said to have shouted back: That’s not enough. I need a majority!)

Yet times may be changing. How else do we explain the election of an Ivy League-educated law professor who has favourite philosophers and poets? Granted, Obama may have been protected from accusations of excessive intelligence by his race. That distracted everyone, and as a black man, he didn’t fit the stereotype of a pointy-head ivory tower elitist.

An intellectual is a person interested in ideas and comfortable with complexity. Intellectuals read classics, even when no one is looking, because they appreciate lessons of Sophocles and Shakespeare that the world abounds in uncertainties and contradictions, and – President Bush, lend me your ears – that leaders self-destruct when they become too rigid and too intoxicated with the fumes of moral clarity.

From Wealth of Nations to Common Wealth of Nations

With the recent publication by Forbes magazine of the ranking of the world’s richest people, a new prospect comes into focus. According to Forbes, there are now around 950 billionaires in the world, with an estimated combined wealth of $3.5 trillion. That’s up an amazing $900 billion in just one year. Even after all the yachts, mansions and luxury living that money can buy, have been funded many times over, these billionaires will still have nearly $3.5 trillion to change the world. Suppose they pooled their wealth, as Buffett has done with Bill and Melinda Gates. By standard and conservative principles of foundation management, a $3.5 trillion endowment would have a 5 percent payout of around $175 billion, an amount sufficient to extend basic health care to all the poorest of the world; end massive pandemics of AIDS, TB, and malaria; jump-start an African Green Revolution; end the digital divide; and address the crying need for safe drinking water for one billion people. The group of fewer than one thousand people would outstrip the entire $105 billion development aid of the twenty-two donor governments that represent a combined population of nearly one billion people. In short, this billionaires’ foundation would be enough to end extreme poverty.

Similarly, companies can play a huge role not only as providers of technology but also as customers of local output from impoverished regions. When companies like Starbucks, Nike, or Gap source from low-income communities, they are not creating poverty (as is sometimes alleged) but reducing it. Of course, this is only true if these companies appease dedicated NGOs like Global Witness, Oxfam, the Interfaith Centre on Corporate Responsibility, Amnesty International and CERES and abide by internationally recognised labour standards and human rights principles related to community rights, workers’ health, and so on.

Quantum of so less?

The US hosts around 5% of the world’s population, but consumes over 25% of the world’s resources and is responsible for a whopping 44% of the carbon emissions in the world. Similarly, 23% in the developed world consume over 66% of the world’s natural resources, while the third world countries consume only between 0.5 to 5%. Bank lending in the US now is astoundingly around $7 trillion – almost 58% of its GDP (GDP being around $12 trillion in real terms) – according to the US Federal Reserve. The same in a poorest of poor country like Nigeria was around $41.97 billion in 2007; and in India at over $500 billion; again almost half of their respective GDPs, and that too in a situation where half of the population does not have access to bank credit. The corollary is quite straightforward. It’s not just the borrowers, but the lenders too who’re to blame. Hey, wasn’t the sub-prime crisis about that only?
