We do not want our kids to grow up in such a culture,” said a resident who claimed to be a father of two teenage children. “These boys and girls bunk their classes and waste their time here. Unless we voice our concern, our children are bound to be affected by the trend.”
The opposition, however, is not limited to this locality. Voices echoing from other quarters of Srinagar are even more intense. “It breeds immorality. It must be nipped in the bud,” says Hamidullah, a resident of Rajbagh area of Srinagar. Asked how a celebration was different from routine dating, he says, “Valentine’s Day celebrations attest the immorality which is slowly creeping into our culture despite the fact that neither our culture nor our religion has any place for it.”
