Ravi Chander committee reveals hometruths, who cares?

The more things change, the more they remain the same. In 1996, the Supreme Court had laid down the ground rules on custodial torture and death. "It is aggravated by the fact that it is committed by persons who are supposed to be protectors of citizens. It is committed under the shield of uniform and authority within the four walls of a police station or lock-up”.

Years later, the situation in Andhra Pradesh remains the same. The Ravi Chander committee set up by the Andhra Pradesh minorities’ commission in September 2007 to examine charges that 20 Muslim youth had been tortured, has concluded that the victims had been held unlawfully. According to the committee, police illegally detained and tortured young men from the minority community without pressing charges after the twin blasts of Mecca Masjid on May 18, 2007, in which 16 people were killed and about 100 injured. “The Ravi Chander Committee report was submitted by the minorities commission to the Chief Minister in December, 2008. But it has been ignored. "This reveals the true attitude of the Congress towards Muslims. Chief Minister, Rajsekhar Reddy is exploiting Muslims in the state,” alleges Syed Taraq Quadri, former member of the minorities commission, who quit in protest against the non-implementation of the report.

Says the Ravi Chander report: "There also appears to be a growing cynicism that persons from a single community are being targeted... It is needless to point out that such a feeling will have to be erased and can only be erased if the government undertakes a pro-active stance and takes definite visible steps."

When TSI contacted the chairman of the Andhra Pradesh minorities commission, Yusuf Qureshi, he declined to speak. Quadri has claimed that it is Qureshi who has not prevailed upon the Chief Minister to take action against the culprits. The committee has also come up with some proposals. These include taking a "detailed statement from those held, examine records with relevant agencies and call for corrective action against erring police officers.” Interestingly, support for this cause has come from Indian-American Muslims. Petitions signed by 2,200 of them have been sent to Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and others demanding the release of those held illegally and enforcement of the report, says Kashiful Huda, editor of a minority news website based in America. But at a time when the country is in the middle of a general election, it would appear that the decision may have to wait until a new government is in place at the Centre.

Fear of the flying shoe What's the leading agenda of Elections 2009? The fear of the "flying" shoe of course. Ever since Jagdish Tytler’s chances were scuppered by journalist Jarnail Singh, and P.Chidambaram came close to getting it, politicians have been mighty apprehensive. Most of all Behenji Mayawati, who keeps pesky journos a respectable 20 feet away every time she holds forth. At a recent Advani rally too, all had to remove their shoes before entering the barricaded area. And CPM’s Sitaram Yechury was seen squirming when a scribe at a Press meet took off his shoes because of the heat. But wait! The SGPC has honoured Jarnail by presenting him with a "saropa".

I know of many actors – though I would not like to take any names – who take a break aft er almost every movie to go to Kerala. And when they come back, they look so white and rosy and healthy. Th ey start looking like these pink chubby babies...

they really glow! So it’s really a very healthy destination.

I had visited Kerala aft er quite a while for the Tanishq ad, which we had shot right aft er the Mumbai terror attacks.

It was such a pleasant break that it made me forget that grim phase we had gone through. I love beaches and the mountains in equal measure.

I was born and brought up in a coastal area in Cochin and then moved to Chennai, and now I’m in Mumbai. So that explains why Kerala is my favourite destination. But if it is for a budget holiday then Srinagar and Kerala are the places one must visit.

He has set out to do what the original super star of Telugu cinema, NTR, achieved more than 25 years ago by humiliating the Congress in assembly elections and becoming Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. But Andhra now faces a three horse race where Chiranjeevi and his party Praja Rajyam have to contend with both the Congress and the Telugu Desam, now led by Chandrababu Naidu, the son-in-law of NTR. There is no doubt that Chiranjeevi is immensely popular and could well be the preferred choice of backward caste voters. But no pundit is yet willing to say with confidence that he will be the next Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Way back in 1983, no pundit was willing to bet on NTR becoming the Chief Minister. He must be hoping that history repeats itself.

There were many twitters and guffaws when the BJP-Akali Dal alliance nominated former Rajneesh devotee and film star Vinod Khanna to take on Congress heavyweight Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder from Gurdaspur. He surprised them all by winning comfortably. Many called it the ‘typical’ one night stand between a Bollywood celebrity and the electorate. But surprise, surprise. Vinod Khanna won again and yet again. The man who once gave even Amitabh a run for his money in the race to super stardom is now a seasoned politician who has been in the Lok Sabha continually for more than a decade. He also managed to become a Union Minister in the NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Anu Gulmohar experiences a ‘light’ trip of Paris, in more ways than one!

Like a lot of typical urban Indians, I lost all control over my increasing waistline once my college ended and I landed up behind a desk staring from morn till evening at a computer screen. And that is why my biggest high in Paris (and there were more than just a few!) was walking under the lovely European August sun, and realising once I got home that I’d dropped a cool three kilos in just 10 days! Paris is a city best experienced by foot. Step out of your hotel lobby and within a short distance you will find a metro station, which connects you to almost all places of interest in Paris. The first place my friends and I zeroed in on to visit was ‘the most beautiful avenue in the world’, Champs-Élysées. Don’t expect bargains here, for this is the most expensive strip of real estate in Europe, and luxury stores, expensive cafés and restaurants line the road. We walked leisurely towards the Arc de Triomphe, watched street performers break a leg (almost!), got ourselves a bite at McDonalds, and clicked photographs by the dozen!

Under the Neo-Byzantine style dome of Galeries Lafayette are the world’s most famous luxury brands in cosmetics, clothes, kitchenware, interior decoration items etc. and every inch of the store is as grand and posh as the products! Shops right outside Lafayette were more suited for our budget, and my friends and I picked up a couple of souvenirs and gifts from there. From there we headed to what seemed like a little India at Rue du Faubourg St. Denis, and gorged on some desi food for about €8 per head.

For most, the Eiffel Tower is their first stop in Paris, and while it wasn’t our first, it wasn’t the last either. Sitting on benches and staring up at the Eiffel Tower framed by the blackness of the night, we waited for our friends who’d parted with about €12 to go up to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Well, the budget was tight and the same view of the city can be enjoyed for free by climbing up the Tour de Montparnasse, so we decided to marvel at this wonder by joining the Parisians sprawled about the sprawling gardens around it!

My favourite part was the village of Avebury and its Neolithic stone rings. Older than Stonehenge, the outer circle is 335 metres in diameter, and made of stones ranging from 3.6 to 4.2 metres in height. One theory is that they were astronomical markers, but the local alternative community regard it as a sacred site, laying as it does on the ancient St Michael ley line.

Quite by chance, Mitch and Kristy took me to Avebury on the day of the spring equinox. Every hippy, druid and wicca in the area had converged on the rings to celebrate. Most sat with their backs against the stones soaking up the spring sun. Others found a quiet corner to perform their own ancient ceremonies. Druid priests floated by in their white robes wishing everyone a happy Equinox.

In the middle of one of the smaller stone circles, a crowd had gathered to witness a Handfasting ceremony. Handfasting is a Celtic wedding ceremony that traces its roots back to an ancient Norse custom where guests tie a ribbon around the clasped hands of the couple. If the ceremony is performed by a recognised Pagan minister, the ceremony can be legally binding. But our couple made their vows for ‘a year and a day,’ a trail marriage of sorts, and the way the ceremony was used back in the olden days.

Former Defence minister and NDA chairman, George Fernandez, has been unwell for the past four years. Bihar chief minister, Nitish Kumar, made a case out of his illness, to deny him a Lok Sabha ticket. An infuriated George has decided to contest independently, and with nothing less than a show of strength, literally. He landed at Patna airport and “climbed down the aircraft without support”. But, Nitish, had slipped to Delhi by then. A couple of days ago, George was unable to say a word at Lohia’a anniversary function. Nitish probably hasn’t heard that a wounded tiger is more dangerous than a healthy one.

Requesting anonymity, a former captain of the Indian cricket team told TSI, “We could have had both the general elections and IPL matches together. But in our country, politics rules and all other things become secondary. I know the elections are of utmost importance. I am convinced that both could have been held together, with a little bit of juggling around in the IPL schedules. And had this happened, we would have given out a clear message to the world that India is not Pakistan or Afghanistan; that it is a safe country. But now, as far as public perception goes, India is no different from Pakistan so far as internal security is concerned.” Is Mr Chidamabaram listening?

If things keep moving like this, is it not possible that, should polling dates in future general elections coincide with national festivals like Diwali or Ramzan or Christmas, the government will cite security concerns as the reason for calling them off? The Central government could argue thus: “Our security concerns force us to ask you to please not celebrate this particular festival this year.” It is widely held that cricket is not just a game for Indians; it is a religion, and among the most binding and unifying of all. But now we are shamed to our feet. If we can’t play cricket in India without fear, then what sort of security guarantee can we offer our countrymen?

Also, is it not sad that before finally deciding to shift IPL-2009 from India, the BCCI did not even bother to contact the Indian team members who were getting ready for the second Test against New Zealand in Napier? Said an iconic IPL player who is part of the Indian squad in New Zealand – once again on condition of anonymity: “To be frank, no one is interested in playing IPL matches overseas. Playing in front of the home crowd is a great deal more comforting. But now we have run out of other options. We are bound by our contracts, and must respond like robots to whatever the IPL wants.” Indeed it is not only Indians who feel let down. Just ask Andrew Flintoff how he feels, and he will tell you how very disappointed he is by this move.

“Moving IPL to South Africa is one of the hardest decisions taken by the BCCI,” says Commissioner and President of IPL Lalit Modi. But on ground it doesn’t look like that. On March 24, before Lalit Modi and CSA chief Gerald Majola held their official press conference in Johannesburg, an official e-mail from the BCCI reached journalists. That became breaking news. This incident happened exactly seven minutes before the official confirmation of South Africa as the IPL-2009 venue at a press conference. That only means that the entire game is managed professionally.

When finally the balance sheet of the IPL-2009 tamasha is pulled out, we will know who the real losers and winners are. Only, one thing seems clear. Whatever else may happen, the IPL governing body is not going to be among the former. They will mint money. Their income may dip somewhat, but the franchise owners, official telecasters, advertisers, players and the host country will get their individual shares. The real ‘Indian Playing XI’ will also enjoy South Africa’s balmy clime. The sole loser will be India’s cricket lovers: The hardcore fan of Kolkata Knight Riders who dreamt of cheering his Dada at Eden Gardens; the amchi Mumbai youth from Bandra who will now not get to hail his ‘Tendlya’; the amma from Chennai whose hero is captain Dhoni – they will all, like the 3.5 million Indian spectators who were dying to get inside the stadium to watch the 59 IPL matches, disconsolate. The only laughing faces belong to those greedy busybodies whom we allow to run the nation’s affairs!

No sir. Apparently, husband and Lok Sabha MP from Bikaner, Dharmendra, does not want too many parliamentarians under one roof. If the husband is not willing to fight, why should the wife?

Use of “Jai Ho” by candidates embarrasses party

The Marxist term for inner-party discipline is ‘democratic centralism’, which basically translates into ‘total subservience to party bosses'. But it is not turning around like that for the Communist Party of India (Marxist). The party had gone to town bashing the Congress for using the "Slumdog Millionaire" song “Jai Ho!” in its poll campaign. But the imperative of maximising slum votes – in a year that is seeing the CPI(M)’s vote bank erode fast – has forced two West Bengal party leaders to use that very song in their campaigns. Lok Sabha candidates Mohammad Saleem and Rupchand Pal are using the song in their campaign posters and wall writings. In fact, Saleem has used his photograph as well in the poster, which the party has slammed as a ‘non-communist approach’. Marxists insist that their candidates must fight polls on ideological and not personal basis. However, the party is yet to comment on Pal’s wall paintings using “Jai Ho”. Saleem’s campaign poster also has the party’s hammer-sickle-star poll symbol. While this has raised the hackles of top party bosses, the Congress has rubbed the salt in further, threatening to complain to the Election Commission, because it had purchased the sole rights to the song.

Caught on the wrong foot, the party’s Kolkata District Committee forced the State Committee to reprimand Saleem. State secretary and politburo member Biman Bose later admitted, “The party does not approve of such banners using the candidates’ photos along with such filmy slogans.”

Reportedly, a group of Saleem supporters, sponsored by corporate friends, had paid for these banners and posters. Bose said, “Since the party symbol is there in the poster, the official interpretation would be that the cost has been incurred by the party, which will eat into the amount of money we can use per candidate.” Meanwhile, Pal told TSI, “My supporters have done all this on their own. I haven't done anything."

That is technology helping astrology.

A marketing head of a media organization, once a strident atheist and rationalist, is getting absorbed in astrology and the predictions. For every problem he would call Vodafone Astro care and speak to the experts available there 24X7.

Another 28 year old man who works at the stock broking firm has been advised to make weekly donations and pray to Lord Hanuman to fight off the malevolent factors in his planetary charts, which are apparently blocking his career. Astrologers say they are increasingly attracting young and educated customers, a trend that reflects changes in Indian society that allow the young to be more in charge of their lives.

Kabir, the mystic poet says in his poetry, Dukh Mein Simran Sab Kare, Sukh Mein Kare Na Koye , Jo Sukh Mein Simran Kare, Tau Dukh Kahe Ko Hoye. (In anguish everyone prays to Him, in joy does none To One who prays in happiness, how sorrow can come.) When things are going well, people are less likely to be found on their knees or at the temples. When things are going well, we banish God to the back burners of our lives, and while we might mutter from time to time a silent "thank you" to God for the good times, we often do not. But then, that has been human behaviour throughout history and it is not going to change in the near future. Of course, technology-in a strange way-has made God even more accessible!

The whole financial crisis is scary and uncomfortable. Not having money or not having enough peace is causing people to do all sorts of things. People turn to God in the same way as the child goes to his mother. When even the government cannot help, then surely God can and will. But will he?

Unlike Cold War, where the world was divided between East and West, and the Soviet Union could be counted on to aid; today the world is divided between “the regions of order” and “the regions of disorder,” that are big enough and disorderly enough that they each require their own super sub-secretary of state to manage the chaos and mobilise the coalitions. “The world today can be much better understood if you think of it from the perspective of regions and not states,” said Gen. Jim Jones, President Barack Obama’s national security adviser. And the regions of disorder are likely to multiply as the world’s economic crisis metastasizes.

“As we look at 2009, on every issue, with the single exception of Iraq, everything is worse,” said Ian Bremmer, co-author of “The Fat Tail,” about the biggest risks facing the world’s decision-makers. “Pakistan is worse. Afghanistan and Russia are worse. Emerging markets are worse. Everything big out there is worse, and some will be made even worse by the economic crisis.” There is a geopolitical storm coming, concluded Bremmer, “and it’s not priced into the market yet.”

Did anyone notice that the State Department issued a travel advisory for Mexico last week, warning that “Recent Mexican Army and police confrontations with drug cartels have resembled small-unit combat ... Large firefights have taken place in many towns and cities across Mexico ... During some of these incidents, US citizens have been trapped.” That is Mexico, not Pakistan!

“As the effects of the economic crisis spread and viable states become weak states and weak states become failed states, it is going to produce a series of geopolitical brush fires, if we are lucky, and real conflagrations, if we are not,” argued David Rothkopf, author of “Running the World,” a history of the National Security Council. “They will each demand the attention and resources of a government that already has limited bandwidth and an empty piggybank.”

No, Clinton doesn’t have too many super sub-secretaries. The truth is, she may not have enough.

Cost to the country is 360 degrees, with no easy solution in sight, says Ishrat Saleem

The attack on the Sri Lankan team in the busy hours of the morning in downtown Lahore on March 3 has left everyone shell-shocked. Cricket enthusiasts are ruing the death of international cricket in Pakistan for the foreseeable future. Mind you, every other person walking the streets of Lahore is a cricket fan. The bookies and the betters are roaming around with long-drawn faces; a perfect day was ruined by bloody attackers. The assailants bloodied six security persons and seven Sri Lankan cricketers, but did not leave behind a single stain of blood themselves. Behind the poker faces of bookies and betters is a lurking fear. All of the 12 attackers, who probably wanted to take the Sri Lankan team hostage – given the dexterity they worked with and the sophisticated weaponry they left behind – escaped without a scratch after a 25-minutes adventure. What a contrast to what happened in Mumbai: all but one attackers were killed and the survivor captured! Ordinary Pakistanis feel trapped.

Talking to The Sunday Indian, Rabia Iqbal, a graduate in Mass Communications from the London School of Economics, who recently returned to Pakistan after completing her degree, said, “The attacks were shocking. I was asleep and woke up to the terrible news, which was very disturbing. Concerns for the safety of immediate family and friends were followed by deep regret. The international image of Pakistan has been shattered, I realised with deep grief, and this incident follows a long line of similar ones that has and still continues to tarnish the country's face. Frankly, we have started to feel like second-class citizens within our own country. It feels like a state of extended house arrest.” And the worst thing is, no one yet knows who is responsible. Some leaders have blamed India, but supplied no evidence, and India has, naturally denied this.

Dr Faheem Hussain, Professor of Physics at Lahore University of Management Sciences believes it was probably done by the same kind of terrorists who attacked Mumbai. He regretted that as a result of this incident Pakistan will be completely isolated from the rest of the world, which will be a disaster for academic life as we will not be able to benefit from foreign faculty or organise international conferences. In the long run, it will have a detrimental impact on the development of the country, which is already short of research faculty.

The tragedy is that marks remain the ultimate criteria for assessing students

Founder of Super 30, which has sent 182 students to IIT

My experience with Super 30 in the last seven years has been great. Thanks to correct guidance, 182 students have qualified for the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). This is a big achievement. The best part is that 75 to 80 per cent of children come from rural backgrounds and among them 25 per cent were unable to get a first division in their higher secondary exams. Despite this drawback, most of them have qualified for IITs, the dream of most youngsters.

This proves two things: one, that success in examinations is not the exclusive preserve of any class of students. Anyone with talent and willing to work hard can achieve it. If children from backward communities get equal opportunity and right guidance, any target is not too high. The second important thing to remember is that students with low grades are also talented and can do very well provided they work hard.

I don’t agree with the theory that only those who get more than 90 per cent are bright. From my own experience, I can say that students getting 50-55 per cent are as bright as those who get 90 plus. We at the Super 30 have consistently demolished this theory, but the tragedy in India is that marks are the ultimate criteria for assessing students.

Exams cannot tell you how talented a child is. It could happen that a student gets so involved in one subject, fascinated by its depth, that he ignores other subjects. And he can also get cut off from other subjects. As a result he gets poor grades in subjects other than his favourite, leading to a lowering of the overall percentage.

Take the example of great scientist Srinivas Ramanujam. Other than mathematics, he used to fail in other subjects. But today the whole world acknowledges his great talent and vast contribution to the world of mathematics. It’s only after his death that Indians recognised his talent.

Academic laggards don’t always finish last. There’s life beyond poor exam results. Why, then, do good grades mean so much? Anil pandey analyses

when Raman flunked his Class 12 exams, his family was devastated. He now knew he wouldn't be able to fulfil his parents' dream of making him a doctor. Worse, advice flew thick and fast. Friends and relatives told him he wasn’t cut out for academics. But Raman held his ground. He was sure his day would come. It did. He cleared Class 12 on his fourth attempt. Thirteen years on, Raman has risen above his poor academic record. He works as an adviser with a multinational company. “I wasn’t a good student. So during my school days, I was always tense and under pressure. But that didn’t stop me from achieving my target. You cannot rectify your past, but with perseverance and patience you can change your fate,” he asserts.

Raman is a shining example for students who meet with failure and are unable to deal with the disappointment. Parents tend to write off such children. They feel that good academic performance is an absolute must for a young person as he gears up to face bigger challenges that lie ahead.

However, there is no dearth of students who have proved that line of thinking wrong. As Raman says, nothing is impossible if one puts one’s mind to it. “One can achieve just about anything by sheer dint of hard work,” he adds.

Oscar-winning music director AR Rahman was a less than average student, but today he is an icon for millions. He has reached the pinnacle of his craft because he did not let lack of academic achievements throw him off balance. He dared to pursue his passion. Indeed, Rahman is proof that success in life stems from doing what one believes in, not what others expect.

The amazing story of Sachin Tendulkar is no different. He was a mediocre student, and so was Albert Einstein. Teachers called American inventor Thomas Alva Edison a “dull student”. These men may have struggled through school, but when it came to proving themselves to the world, they were second to none. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Winston Churchill, who changed the history of the world, were also average students.

Not everybody can be as successful as the aforementioned personalities, but their stories, and those of countless others, prove that the academic system may not always be equipped to assess the true worth of students. The system places too much emphasis on marks. Failure to measure up often leads to undue depression among students.

A student who scores 60 per cent marks walks with his head in the clouds, but one who gets 59 per cent finds himself down in the dumps and is gripped by a sense of dejection. Calling the efficacy of the education system into question, well-known sociologist Satyamitra Dube says: “Our marking system is wrong. Teachers are made to check a whole bundle of answer papers in one day. The marking system is not foolproof and there always exists a chance of human error. That is why we are now talking about introducing a grading system.”

Poll savvy strategists

The party's computer department headed by Vishwajit Prithvijit Singh was told to profile the redrawn constituencies post-delimitation. The Congress sent 15 to 20 observers to all states, save Bihar and UP, to hunt for winnable candidates. Rahul browsed through all this info. It was from this data base that the idea to hold elections in the Youth Congress came. The new emphasis was to boost inner democracy in the party. Rahul was also sent to Bundelkhand to raise local issues. Poll strategists say this helped the party in cornering Mayawati in her own lair.

Till the end the Congress let no outsider get a peek at its election strategies. Pawan Singh Ghatowar, Jitendar Singh, Joyti Singh, Shamim Ahmed, Jiten Prasad and Shakil Akhtar were told to guard against possible leaks and sabotage.

Once the overall election strategy had been finalised the core group headed by Jai Ram Ramesh formed a war room on 15th Gurdwara Rakabganj road. Ramesh was asked to resign from the Cabinet and take charge. The war room members were assigned to write the speeches of senior leaders and lay out the itineraries of 24 of them, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul and Manmohan Singh. Jai Ram Ramesh told TSI that they had finalised their strategies a whole month before the poll dates were announced.

The campaign was led by Digvijay Singh, in which he was assisted by Jai Ram Ramesh and Janardan Dwivedi. Ahmed Patel, Motilal Vora, RK Dhawan and Shushil Kumar Shinde provided election material and funds to the contestants.

Congress sources said Rahul was told to make special mention of the NREGA, the farmers’ loan waiver and Dalit uplift in election speeches. He must also hammer home the point that Manmohan Singh would remain prime minister in a Congress-led government. All this made for a comprehensive and winning package. Said Digvijay Singh, "We were sure of winning 200 seats because of our sound approach. It’s another story that in exit polls the media did not favour us."

Frozen in time and space

On turning 18, my father insisted that I get a voter’s I-card made. The only motive behind getting a Voter’s I-Card was that I should have a valid document to prove my identity!!! By now the Vajpayee government, along with its NDA coalition, had successfully completed its five-year tenure and India was once again gearing up for elections in 2004. And since now I had my Voter’s I-Card, I though of putting it to good use.

Staying in Lutyens Delhi, our locality belonged to the prestigious and prized New Delhi constituency. Known for its ‘elite’ nature and Sikh voters being the decisive factor, my constituency always witnessed lively contests. In 2004, standing from our constituency was Ajay Maken who as power minister played a key role in privatising electricity and bringing relief for the laid-back Delhi Vidyut Board. No guesses then that I had voted for this young and enterprising Congress man, as opposed to BJP’s veteran Jagmohan. Maken won hands down.

This time too, we saw frenzied excitement and energy. Congress has once again walked away with the top honours. Even the black shadows of Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar have not been able to turn the tide in BJP’s favour. The Tytler issue made me think that I knew very little about the 1984 riots on Sikhs and since I belonged to this minority community, I decided it’s time that I better know what happened 25 years back.

I got hold of the book “When a Tree Shook Delhi’ by Manoj Mitta and H. S. Phoolka. I was hooked from page one itself. It was such an intriguing book that in less than a day, I had completed it entirely. I felt deep revulsion toward H.K.L Bhagat, Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar.

I also felt a sense of betrayal as I had always claimed Rajiv Gandhi to be my favourite leader. A chance meeting with Mr Phoolka (he stays near my house) and learning about his great sacrifices made me wonder: why vote or Congress.

But then again, who says BJP is any better. If Congress was to be blamed for the 1984 riots, then BJP is equally responsible for the Godhra carnage. It’s just a matter of concluding which is worse of the two. Even though I was shocked with the revelations, my decision to vote for Congress remained intact. Afterall, 25 years is a long time and one needs to let things go. By letting issues to fester will only bring in deep sorrow and nothing more. Tragically, the current imbroglio does not seem to end. Solving it would be the big final laugh.

It is an irony that a country clocking 8-9% GDP growth rates in the last 5-6 years has 20% of its villages and nearly 300 million denizens without access to power. The yawning gap existing in the power demand supply graph can be blamed to a large extent on the lack of synchronisation between the development of coal mines and power generation plants to which they are linked. This can be easily achieved if coal users having long term contracts are mandated to enter into arrangements in which the quantity and quality of coal supply is specified with firm supply commitments binding all parties.

Coal-based power plants are by far the largest emitter of green house gas emissions. But the searing debate about economic growth vs environment protection has more takers for the first option in the Indian context because of the number of jobs that can be generated. According to Solanki, “Currently the total manpower employed in Coal India stands at 4.1 lakh, so the overall industry might have five lakh employees. The reforms, if implemented, have the potential to generate an equal amount of (extra) jobs in the next 5-6 years.” That is undoubtedly a figure too compelling to ignore.

As a whole, this "Kala Patthar" has the potential to lighten the lives of millions of Indians living in conditions much darker than the very mines that contain this treasure. Some far-sighted and concrete measures on the part of policy makers can end the litany of woes for this fledgling sector and also pave the way for powering up the darkest corners of the nation.

TSI Five-O: Not a bright tomorrow

Bollywood couldn’t have returned to the theatres any worse. “Kal Kissne Dekha”, the first movie released post the strike (producer Vashu Bhagnani’s son Jackky’s debut), is an unmitigated disaster. The story is part romance, part action, part sci-fi and full of nonsense. Nihal Singh is a small-town boy who makes gadgets in his spare time, has a brilliant mind and can see visions of the future. He joins an elite college in Mumbai and saves Meesha’s (Vaishali Desai) life and as it goes they fall in love. But his “secret” of seeing the future is revealed and then enters a terrorist plot. Jackky (who reminds me of a shoddier version of Uday Chopra) desperately needs acting classes. Rishi Kapoor (sporting the weirdest hairdo ever) is completely wasted in the movie and the only time you actually are interested is when Riteish Deshmukh enters. And that’s saying a lot!

The party ain't over

BJP may not practice caste politics in states like UP and Bihar but the caste factor helped it win many seats in Karnataka. Lingayats are the dominant community in the middle and northern parts of the state and chief minister Yeddyurappa is the most popular leader of the community. BJP in Karnataka has become more a regional party headed by Yeddyurappa than a party controlled from its Delhi headquarter or by the Nagpur-based RSS bosses. Yeddyurappa was given a free hand in selecting the candidates. Lesson number two for the BJP: strong regional leaders still make a big difference.

But there is a much bigger lesson for BJP leaders even as they wallow in self pity and play pass the buck. And that lesson is very clear - it ain’t over till it is really over. Thanks to breathless and often hysterical media coverage, an average Indian might get the perception that the BJP is gradually disappearing from the political landscape of the country. Pundits are bending over backwards to write post mortems that read more like obituaries and dirges.

But the prescient reader will remember how similar stories were bandied about regarding the Congress from the time it lost the Lok Sabha elections in 1996 till the time it surprised everybody - including itself - in 2004! After the 1996 loss, the Congress was in a mess and internal squabbling, ego wars and divisiveness had become the party's hallmark. It was led by the veteran leader Sitaram Kesri, always better known as the party treasurer. Everybody thought the party was heading for extinction. And look at what has happened since then! It would be equally foolish to write off the BJP now just because it has suffered a humiliating defeat and appears rudderless and directionless. It was in a more life- threatening situation in 1984 when the party was reduced to a mere two seats in the 543-seat Lok Sabha. If it could recover from there, then anything is possible!

But making the possible probable will be a formidable challenge. There is no doubt that the era of Vajpayee and Advani is over. There is also no doubt that there will be a no holds barred war for control of the party among the next generation of leaders. There is no doubt that ‘leaks’ to the media will project the impression of a party in disarray. But succession wars always end and new leaders always take over. The Congress had to go through a Kesri phase before it painfully rebuilt itself. Who will be the BJP’s Kesri?

Is it true that your father's guru, Swami Rammohan Brahmachari was more than 130-years-old when your father met him? Did you ever try to locate him?

My father had heard about Rammohan Brahmachari and wanted to meet him. At that time a British Viceroy was suffering from sugar problems. My father cured him with the help of breathing exercises. When the Viceroy asked him what he could offer in return, my father told him that he wanted to go to Tibet to meet Rammohan Brahmachari. The Viceroy had him escorted to the great Yogi. It was a long walk of three and half months. When my father saw Rammohan Brahmachari, he prostrated in front of him, and was taken in by him as his disciple. It was a seven-and-a-half-year long association in which my father learnt all types of yoga practices. Rammohan Brahmachari was not alone, he had a few children. It is believed that he was more than 130-years-old when my father met him.

It was my dream to meet my father’s guru and I went to Manasarovar in 1992 but couldn’t find him. So I visualised him in my mind and prostrated. He must have died long ago.

Why did your father not live as long as his guru?

He did not live as long because he was sad. My mother died of cancer when she was in her seventies. He stopped eating in his last days and on February 28, 1989 he died at the age of 100 years and three and half months.

How much of Rammohan Brahmachari’s yoga is still alive in the yoga you teach and the yoga being taught by your father's students?

My father practiced whatever was taught by his Guru. I learnt from him for 29 years. My father taught his students, including me, on a one-to-one basis to cure people from different diseases. He also taught Indira Devi, who was a very famous yoga teacher and lived for 102 years. I teach what my father’s Guru had taught hundred years ago. What do you recommend people should eat to live a long and healthy life?

Even though vegetarianism is ideal, it is very difficult to be a vegetarian. In Tibet, you cannot grow any vegetables because of high altitudes. Generally, a person must follow vegetarianism; if nothing is available you have to accept whatever is available. Your father was able to stop his heartbeat for two minutes. Did you ever try it too? In 1964, when he was 76 years old, upon my insistence, he stopped his heartbeat in front of me. He asked me to check his pulse. I did. Then he asked me to check his pulse after 15 minutes. When I checked after 15 minutes, there was no pulse for two minutes. He had stopped his heart for two minutes!! Then it returned. I pleaded to him to teach me how to do it too, but he refused. He said that he did it only to prove the power of yoga. My mother told me how father used to perform some yoga practices daily, which would have helped him to achieve that feat.

Do conjugal relationships impact health and longevity?

Despite their militant past, the government allowed them to operate as counter-insurgents. They were largely controlled by their own commanders. The government paid them 1,500 rupees a month. Ikhwan commanders promised them assimilation in the state’s police force once the counter-insurgency was over. Insurgency survived. Bashir did not.

At the family’s ancestral home – a mud and brick structure – at Hajan township in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, Hajra now brings up Bashir’s two sons – Hilal (12) and Yasir (11). Her daughter-in-law, Sharifa, whom Bashir married in 1995, doesn’t live with them anymore. She married another man after Bashir's death. Bashir’s younger brother Manzoor now has the responsibility of bringing up the children.

“My younger son has five children. With Bashir's two children, he now has the responsibility of seven. He works in the fields and rears sheep,” says Hajra. “The government has never cared to find out whether Bashir’s children even survived or not, let alone do anything for their welfare.” Hajra says that Hilal stands in front of his father’s photo and speaks to him. “This morning while leaving for his aunt’s home in the neighbouring village, he told his father that he would come back by the evening. He even sought his permission. That traumatises me,” she says.

Neglected by the government and ostracised by society, Hajra and her family now live a life of poverty. Thousands of other families across Kashmir suffer the same fate despite the fact that their male members paid with their lives to fight a war that the armed forces found difficult to handle. A sketchy record maintained by Kuka Parray’s personal assistant, Fayaz Ahmad Dar, at Hajan reveals that the number of men who fought as counter-insurgents across Kashmir was around 4000. “Almost 2500 of them were killed. Many died in encounters. Some died in ambushes. In the cases of a few commanders, we are not certain who the assassin was,” says Dar.

Naxalism gradually spread. When Jharkhand was still a part of Bihar, 12 districts were naxal infested, now the number stands at 22 districts… that is, the entire state. Till date, more than 1,500 persons, mostly police personnel, have been killed by the naxals. Money for modernising the police force has been spent to purchase cars for ministers and personnel trained to combat naxalites are now their bodyguards.

Ministers regularly use choppers to move from one place to another within capital city Ranchi. And income-tax raid yielded Rs three crore from an engineer appointed on a daily wage basis; so it is a mere guess how much worth of property would show up in raids on ministers like Enos Ekka and Harinarayan Rai: Rs 50 crore! In fact, one minister managed to lay a pucca road from his own home to that of his prospective parents-in-law just before his wedding. And though it is true that poverty has slipped by two per cent in the state, its per capita income remains a mere Rs 7,500, as against the national average of Rs 29,382.

Compare that to Chhattisgarh, where the per capita income today is Rs 29,621, a little above the national average, and budgetary allocation has reached Rs 22,111 crore. The BPL families are getting rice at Rs two per kg under the regime of Dr Raman Singh. Under Madhya Pradesh, this region, made a state in 2000, had received Rs 95 crore for road making, but now they are spending Rs 1,400 crore, carpeting the state with 12,000 km of excellent roads. In terms of industrial investments, Chhattisgarh is second to Gujarat. Whereas literacy stands still at 54 per cent in Jharkhand, in Uttarakhand, it is already 75 per cent and the per capita income is Rs 12,000 crore. Hydel power generation is likely to peak at 5,000 MW in the next two years and tourism is booming. Today, Jharkhand lies in political coma, under President’s Rule. But there is no guarantee that the rule by any party will not again lapse into painful misrule!

It's time to redefine dance, as we know it. Indira Parthasarathy at the Attakkalari Contemporary Dance Festival...

It doesn't matter if you win or lose, it's what you do with your dancin' shoes.' Remember these lines from “Grease”, that timeless Travolta musical? At the Attakkalari India Biennial 2009 dance festival in Bangalore, it was the whole point. A multi-discipline contemporisation of a medium of expression as dance, accomplished by a unique enterprise of artists and art connoisseurs, resulted in a 10-day long (Feb 6 to 15) extravaganza that the city won’t forget in a hurry.

Like a son et lumière crossed over with a musical, the event brought under one roof – in fact, four (venues) – the theatrics of dance with the magic of design, be in terms of stage installations, acoustic arrangements or lighting technologies. For instance, in Chronotopia, the highly evocative multimedia dance production presented by the Attakkalari Repertory, the choreography that unfurled in sensuously gentle yet amazingly agile moves was accentuated by the dimensions lent by state-of the-art light play, and some haunting music by Paris-based musician Mathias Duplessy. Even though based on an ancient Tamil epic, Chilappathikaram, Chronotopia was still open to interpretation by the audience, as was the case with nearly all other performances at the Festival. Explained Jayachandran Palazhy, Artistic Director of the Festival, as well as one of the performers in Chronotopia, “It’s a journey through space and time. Technology helped to dislodge the sense of chronology at times… The interactive scenography actually reflected the emotional landscape of the characters themselves.”

Yet, in this 21st century, where sports strive to bridge the gap between humanity and society, the term ‘racism’ is still associated with this game. On the one hand, football gave opportunity to black payers to be at par with any white player, while on other hand, it failed to melt down frictions between European nations in the football ground. In Germany, one can still feel the wave of hatred for French players and many other black sports personalities. The biggest irony is that the countries that hold the title for best football playing nation also holds the title for racial discrimination. In January 2009 itself, Real Madrid was fined with $3,900 for making racist gestures. If you think this act is too very rare, sample this: In April 2004, Coach Ron Atkinson was caught making a racist comment about Chelsea's Marcel Desailly, who is black. In the same year, in November, Spanish coach Luis Aragones was caught racially abusing players of a rival team. While in March 2007, Lithuania fans unfurl a racist banner directed against France's black players. And all this is just the tip of the iceberg.

A hamlet in the hills

Just about 45 kilometers from the ever swarming Shimla, is situated a beautiful hill station called Chail. Often referred to as the ‘summer capital’ by its creator, Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh, Chail is indeed the perfect reference. It is surrounded by a thick cover of majestic, soaring deodars and is one of the most picturesque hill stations located amidst scented forests of pine. As one approaches Chail through the narrow roads, one can feel the freshness set in. The aroma of this hilly region bestows a sensation of a valley of flowers. Here, with each whiff of air that caresses, one feels fresher, healthier and relaxed.

Chail truly makes you believe that it’s one of the many exotic wonders of nature and is basically built on three hills, namely, Rajgarh, Pandhewa and Sadh Tiba. Since mine was a mere two-day trip, I had to be on my feet to see all the beauty. The moment I reached, I set out to pay a visit to the world’s highest cricket ground. It was well maintained, surrounded by gigantic deodar and pine. This ground is often used for playing polo as well. Thereafter, I toured the magnificent Rajgarh palace, which had the most elaborate furnishings, comfortable log huts and cottages, dense forests and serene pathways along with sprawling lawns, a children’s park, a lover’s hill and sports facilities. For me, Chail is a resort in the real sense of the term, for it offers different varieties of delicious food, which I savoured after a long, informative and captivating tour.

The next morning I woke up to the wonderful view of the Himalayan ranges with its snow-capped peaks spectacularly gleaming in the sun with the beautiful orchards and sylvan pine valleys around that kept me busy admiring the wonders of nature. Since I was in the ‘hiker’s paradise,’ I set out for the Chail Sanctuary which has species like ghoral, red junglefowl and cheer pheasants. It’s an out-of-this-world sight where one can spend hours together. I then headed for Sidh Baba Ka Mandir, which was originally selected as the site for the Maharaja’s palace. History unfolds that Bhupinder Singh had a dream according to which this place had significance with respect to a saint. Hence, the Maharaja decided to build a majestic temple here.

The evenings in Chail are chilly and it was time for me to leave. On my way back, I had a breathtaking view of Kasauli, Shimla and other neighbouring hills, all lit up spectacularly in the dark, offering jewel-studded view...Chail sure casts a spell.

A soft history of Infosys

“I want to tell you something... I am 5'4" tall. I come from a lower middle class family. I can never become rich in my life and can never give you any riches. You are beautiful, bright, and intelligent and you can get anyone you want. But will you marry me ....” These lines not only changed the then Sudha Kulkarni’s life but heralded India’s entrée into the IT world and become a global player!

You guessed it right. This is how NR Narayana Murthy of Infosys Technologies Ltd proposed his lady love Sudha in 1970s when both were in Telco (Tata Motors), Pune. They shared thoughts and twined together inseparably. Sudha put forward Murthy’s proposal to her father, only to get rejected at first. Cause? Murthy didn't have a decent job till then. In 1977, Murthy got a job as the assistant manager with Patni Computers in Bombay. Sudha’s father finally agreed to their marriage. Murthy conceived Infosys in 1981. The couple had nothing but vision and zero capital. A small house they bought in Pune was the first Infosys office. Later, they shifted to Bangalore. The rest is history, which went along with the Infosys.

Gun shots rang out across the ravines and she fell. Jagan Gurjar picked up his lover Komesh and ran… and ran... till he reached Dhaulpur in Rajasthan, and put her in a hospital. Well, lovers do such things. But the point is that Jagan Gurjar and Komesh are Chambal bandits. She was injured in an encounter, and though Jagan did manage to flee and take her for treatment, she was arrested on November 5, 2008, from the hospital. Then Jagan did something few would dare: he negotiated with the police and surrendered in front of the Member of Parliament Sachin Pilot, on the single condition that he be put in the same jail as Komesh!

The Chambal ravines have been notorious for banditry… notorious for the cops, but originally it was a glorious tradition. They say that the Chambal river represents the open tresses of Draupadi, who had vowed not to tie a plait till her hair would be washed in the blood of Dussashan, who had derobed her in the court of Dhritarashtra. The banditry of Chambal is basically rebellion, the bandits known as Baghis, or those who have taken up baghawat (rebellion), to redeem their honour.

“If you are found with a person of the opposite gender, you will either be handed over to police or your heads will be shaven,” the hoardings, which came up at street junctions of the Karan Nagar residential area in Srinagar, read. The Police were taken by surprise. Srinagar’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Afad-ul-Mujtaba, vowed investigation besides taking the hoardings down immediately.

But the residents circuitously favoured the messages on the hoardings. “Ours is a residential area where roaming of couples has become frequent. We do not want our kids to grow up in such a culture,” said a resident who claimed to be a father of two teenage children. “These boys and girls bunk their classes and waste their time here. Unless we voice our concern, our children are bound to be affected by the trend.”

The opposition, however, is not limited to this locality. Voices echoing from other quarters of Srinagar are even more intense. “It breeds immorality. It must be nipped in the bud,” says Hamidullah, a resident of Rajbagh area of Srinagar. Asked how a celebration was different from routine dating, he says, “Valentine’s Day celebrations attest the immorality which is slowly creeping into our culture despite the fact that neither our culture nor our religion has any place for it.”

I'm glad that The Sunday Indian is dealing with topics close to my heart. Recently, it was "A few good.." (TSI, Jan 19-25) cover story, a ray of hope in the darkness of politics and after that you dared to do something that no one else could. You defended Modi and Israel. India should learn to maintain its dignity from teensy-weensy Israel. Though stronger in all respects, India has bowed down to terrorists in north, south, east, west and centre (pun intended). The recent gory killings by Naxalites is a glaring example. Last issue (TSI, Feb 2-8) had thought-provoking articles on "Slumdog..." by Sutanu Guru and Arindam Chaudhuri.

Do not dwell on the past. I had contact with Muthalik but the comparison would not be applicable now. I’m again elucidating that neither we nor Bharatiya Janatha Parivara has anything to do with them. In the recently held Assembly elections in Karnataka, they stood against us. The incident is shocking and Muthalik’s scandalous behaviour is condemnable. Who are they to take law in their own hands or attack women?

Banning Sri Rama Sene is not the ultimate remedy, you have said. But in Karnataka there are various groups infamous for hooliganism and people are anxious. So, by banning a group, why don’t you send a strong message to them?

I’m not going to ban Sri Rama Sena. It is rather more important to implement restrictions and take sturdy actions. I have done the same in the Mangalore incident. Banning is not the solution, but if it becomes indispensable, I will surely reconsider that.

Most of the times, in the case of law and order in Karnataka, Acharya’s and yours statements were contradictor.Do you people lack coordination? No. We never gave contradictory statements. We always put forward the truth in the front of media and the people.

Then what would you say on the various differing statements published in the media?

It’s pure misconception.

Why a party of Muslims only?

The time has come for Muslims to form their own party because they will not achieve their political objectives by depending on other parties. Our party will not only raise the Muslim issues but will also fight for the rights of the oppressed and marginalised people. Muslim vote for now is scattered and there is a need to unite it under a banner.

How many states do you intend to contest?

Our party will fight parliamentary elections in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Maharashtra and Assam. In order to get rid of rising political crisis in the country, the Muslims should be ready to get political rights at the national level. AUDF will play a leading and important role in this concern. Right now it is not possible to register the party as a national party in the election commission, therefore, AUDF will contest elections in different states and later, it will be formed as an all India party.

Will AUDF ally with Congress in other states when in Assam it fought against the Congress?

Assam has a different set of problems. We can not link it to other states. Our party will never have an alliance with the BJP but we are ready to fight elections along with other secular and democratic forces.

“The air distance between Bhopal to Bangalore and Chennai is almost similar, i.e. 1020 kms. So, we pit our pigeons against those of the Tamil Nadu Club. It is the first time our pigeons will commute such a great distance,” says Chellaiah, Secretary, KRPC. Lest the enthusiasm of the members brimmeth over, only 25 pigeons belonging to KRPC have been allowed to participate in the Bhopal race. The race categories are ‘Young Derby’, ‘Open Bird’, and ‘Derby Bird’. While Young Derby provides stage for debut entrants, the veterans and previous year winners are allowed to participate in Open Bird. In Derby Bird, only one pigeon per member can participate.

After the contestant pigeons reach ‘finish line’ – that is fly back in to their respective lofts – the time is noted by the official in the owner’s house. The bird clocking the highest velocity – distance divided by time – is the winner. Advanced GPS technology is deployed to measure the distance and time taken. Pigeons have traveled 700 kms (from Nanded to Bangalore) in 11 hours – faster than the Indian ‘express’ trains! Explaining the remarkable ability, pigeon specialist KP Ramprasad says, “By sensing the geomagnetic fields and the movement of sun, pigeons tend to trace their way.”

In places like Barcelona, and Perpignan (southern France), pigeon racing enjoys great patronage. But in India, the government’s import policy on foreign breeds forces the pigeon fanciers to bank on indigenous breed or ‘homers’. This year’s Nanded race was won by KRPC member Krishnamurthy’s pigeon, having traversed the distance in 14 hours! The next to romp home was only 25 minutes off the mark. Before one could wonder if any of this be cruel, Rohan, another KRPC member clarifies, “There is no question. Flying for 12 to 13 hours is common; some birds can even travel from continent to continent. Flying is better than being caged in. Besides the bamboo boxes are also very spacious and comfortable.” “The Indian Wildlife Act does not bar feeding, training and domesticating pigeons; those are falcons and other type of birds. And till date no wildlife activists or animal clubs have objected to the race,” adds Prabhu. Certainly a consolation and an achievement, this sport..

Your cover story on a few handful of politicians of character and vision (TSI, Jan 19-25) will surely bring back our lost confidence in the Indian polity. It's enough testimony to the fact that there are strong exceptions to our frequent 'Transparency International' ratings and to the earlier promulgation that 'corruption is a global phenomenon'. It's ironic that despite being the world's largest democracy with such skilled manpower, we are lagging behind because of the lack of political will. Corruption and red tapism in our country has gone to such an extent that the MPs charge even for the questions to be raised in the Parliament. Let's hope that these 'ambassadors of democracy' work hard towards the peace and development of the country and set a model for their fellow companions.

Forged documents tumble out of Nadar's closet

The latest allegation that Neelalohithadasa Nadar, former Kerala minister in EK Nayanar's LDF Ministry (1996-2001), had forged papers to ensure acquittal in the Nalini Netto sexual harassment case has given a second life to an old case. The defence lawyers had argued that the former transport secretary, Nalini Netto, IAS, complained of sexual harassment after noticing that some charges and comments in the transfer note could embarrass her. The transfer document was a photocopy of a note dated February 1, 2000, believed to have been sent by Nadar to the Chief Minister, advising that Nalini Netto be transferred from her post. Now, as the case unfolds, allegations are flying thick and fast that the former minister and present BSP state chief Nadar got the court relief with the help of a forged document. Interestingly, it was the former Section Officer in the Transport Department, Vijayakumari Amma, herself who pointed out the discrepancy in the document: it contained her signature while she had joined the department only in May 2000! The document came to Vijayakumari's notice when the Additional Chief Secretary, General Administration Department, issued her a memo seeking an explanation and asking for Netto's transfer order in original. The case arose when Netto accused Nadar of outraging her modesty at his office in the Kerala Legislative Assembly complex on December 21, 1999. Netto had complained directly to the then Chief Minister and CPI(M) politburo member, the late EK Nayanar. Consequently, Nadar lost the ministerial berth within a few days. Thiruvananthapuram First Class Magistrate Court punished him with three months’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000. But, the Fast Track Court acquitted him on July 22, 2008.

Now, the Kerala Government is understood to have referred the matter to the High Court, which is due to consider an appeal against the Thiruvananthapuram Fast Track Court verdict that had acquitted Neelalohithadasa Nadar.

Money would continue to play a crucial role before or after elections

Money is increasingly becoming an indispensable proposition when it comes to influencing voters in election s anywhere in the world. Even in developing countries like India, where fiscal deficit is a norm, a gigantic Rs.10,000 crore is estimated to be spent during the election this time. One wonders what could have been done by this money if at all the political parties were serious about bringing in development.

Researches show that the two highest spenders in election are the US and Canada. While Canada spent over $300 million in 2008, the US spent over $5.3 billion in the 2008 US presidential election. Collectively all parties in the US raised over $1.64 billion while the US President Barack Obama alone had raised $532 million which adds up to $7.39 per vote. And mind you, a large chunk of money raised by Obama was a result of small donations received from Obama’s fans and not from big fat corporate donations. Even Nigerians understood the mystery behind the politics of money and allowed its Stock Exchange to allocate $630,000 to influence the US election. This bluntly ignored the US election rule that prohibits political parties from receiving contributions from abroad. The domestic corporates were not far behind. The McCain campaign finance is a case in point. However there is very little connection between money spent and voters’ turnout. Huge expenditure does not guarantee high turn-out. Even after spending millions of dollars, the Canadian election saw a merely 59% voter turnout in 2008!! Yet collection of donations for election continues to be a major business. For, if not in buying votes during elections, who knows it might help in buying the same in the Parliament after elections are over and results are declared.

As far as Infosys goes, the company’s core strategy has been to focus very passionately on high margin accounts, a strategy that can be credited for its sector beating performance. The other aspect is the adage of not putting all your eggs in one basket, due to which the company is not as badly affected by the BFSI debacle. But the recently announced results for the fourth quarter are not positive for the company and the sector in the long term. Infosys has forecast a yoy revenue decline of 8.2-6.5% under IFRS (which considers exchange rates for major global currencies) for FY 2009-10, which depends heavily on exchange rate trends. Winners show How to beat the pants off your competition in a downturn...

B&E attempts to bring out some key facets of competition beating business strategy in a slowdown by analysing the strategies of Indian companies that are actually doing better than their competition in their respective industries. In selecting our elite list of companies, we have considered the all important benchmark of profitability, both in terms of absolute figures and yoy growth trends, for the nine months ending December 2008 (till figures are available). Apart from one exception in the real estate sector, we find that all these winning companies have posted double digit growth rates in profitability. Now let us analyse what these winners have done in their respective sectors to shine in the current not-so-bright times.

The telecom leader is clearly Bharti Airtel. TRAI may have given it a thumbs down on network congestion (read more about it in the Corporation on Tata Teleservices in this issue), but the company continues to rule the market in terms of subscriber base at 91.1 million (at the end of February 2009). Sunil Bharti Mittal, CMD, Bharti Airtel Limited, said on the performance, “Bharti Airtel continues to lead the telecom growth story, adding customer and revenue market share despite intense competition. Bharti’s strategy of extensive roll out ahead of competition, especially in new villages, has yielded rich dividends.” What also keeps Bharti in the black is the fact that it has leveraged its pioneering advantage to get the cream of customers, which helps it even as telecom ARPUs in general are going down. Dipesh Mehta, telecom analyst, Khandwala Securities, comments, “ARPUs for the company have fallen for the company like other telecom companies, but they have not fallen drastically.” Moreover, the perception of Bharti of being a quality service provider continues to go heavily in its favour. Years of brand building are now bearing fruit.

The automotive sector, on the other hand, has been decisively lead by two wheeler giant Hero Honda. Pawan Munjal, MD & CEO, Hero Honda Motors Ltd. proudly affirms, “An unprecedented share of over 57% in the domestic motorcycle market particularly when the industry has been witnessing a massive slowdown... is reflective of the strong fundamentals of this company.” Being the market leader in the executive segment definitely has its advantages; more so in the era of discretionary spending; and the company sports some best sellers in this segment like the Splendour and the Passion. New product launches like the 150cc Hunk Premium and variants of the Glamour and the CD Deluxe last year are also doing well for the company. Also, the rural push that the company has made over the years seems to be delivering results now. That’s why Hero Honda is gloating over a 10% increase in sales yoy in March, while key competitor Bajaj reported a decline of 14%.

Who says a blue eye is a true eye? Ask Lula!

And it is true that the upper-crust, underwhelming Anglo-Saxon leaders who allowed America’s financial markets to morph into louche casinos, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, were very, very white men with blue eyes. As the Who sang: “No one knows what it’s like to be the bad man, to be the sad man behind blue eyes. No one knows what it’s like to be hated, to be fated to telling only lies.”

Every time Cheney looks into the camera with those ice-blue eyes and says Obama is making us less safe, it sounds as if he’s secretly hoping we do get attacked just to prove his point that Obama is weak, even if he has to go up in smoke, too. (When I double-checked the color of Cheney’s eyes, his daughter Liz Cheney jokingly e-mailed back, “Sorry, but that information is classified.”)

Before Obama, presidents have been more known for blue eyes. The ones with brown eyes, Richard Nixon and LBJ, came a cropper. Throughout history, whether it’s images of Jesus that don’t look Middle Eastern or Barbies who don’t look ethnic, blue eyes and white skin have often been painted as the ideal. Surveys show that people with blue eyes are considered more intelligent, attractive and sociable. A 2007 University of Louisville study concluded that people with blue eyes were better planners and strategic thinkers – superior at things like golf, cross-country running and preparing for exams – while people with brown eyes had better reflexes, making them good at hockey and football.

In the 1990s, USSR’s disintegration and Germany’s unification were seen by many as the defeat of communism. In essence, it wasn’t just that. It was also the victory of nationalism. Germans wanted to unite again as one by breaking off the shackles of ideological illusions that divided them for nearly half a century. Likewise, there was always an undercurrent of ethnic nationalism in the Soviet Bloc. So the Russians, the Kazakhs, the Uzbeks, the Turkmens, the Georgians, the Armenians, all went their own way to create new nation states. East Europe followed the footsteps with the disintegration of Czechoslovakia and bloodied ethnic splits in Yugoslavia.

Modern history is testimony to the fact that a strong current of fierce nationalism and a certain amount of threat of extermination by an enemy State actually helps nations to grow faster. Taiwan exemplifies that. A nation which has constantly remained under the shadow of a ruthless Chinese invasion, has not only become one of the most technologically advanced nations today, but has also developed a defence force quite capable of giving China reason enough to worry.

Dasgupta’s successor will not find the going very easy

Aleader can be as great as can be, but he cannot ever be larger than his team. That’s exactly where Multi Screen Media’s (MSM) now ex-CEO Kunal Dasgupta faltered. Undoubtedly, Sony grew leaps and bounds in India under his stewardship. But unfortunately, insecurity and the fear of being overshadowed by new blood gripped him so badly that his prime focus shifted (from ensuring the channel’s success) towards chucking out his possible successors.

Dasgupta joined Sony as CFO in 1995 and was promoted as CEO in just three years (in 1998). Over his 14-year-long stint, he build the Sony network from one entertainment channel to a bouquet of six channels. With his visionary leadership, he has not only led Sony but the entire genre. He brought the concept of cricket as entertainment by telecasting it on SETMAX. He started telecasting new movie flicks to get glued eyeballs on weekends. He also managed to displace Zee TV from its number one position in 1999. This time, his weapon was horror show ‘Aahat’. Andy Kaplan, President – International Networks, SPTI acknowledges Kunal’s contribution, “Kunal has played an instrumental role in growing our channels business... His experience and leadership will be greatly missed.”

#3 – Depreciation Where on one hand, other retailers adjust for depreciation every 15 years, Shoppers Stop readjusts it once every 5 years; that means, more pressure upfront on book losses. Nagesh justifies, “We believe this industry is growing very fast, therefore assets have to be replenished every 5 years.” I have a simple question. Why attempt that at all if all it does is give more losses?

#4 – Employee Charges Rise in manpower cost, which stood at 22% for the year 2008 (as per Assocham) is also hitting Shoppers Stop hard. This is one area they’re battling out with all guns blazing in the middle. Apart from “rationalising salaries” of its personnel, as Shoppers Stop CEO Govind puts it to me a few hours earlier, “In the last two quarters, what we have tried to do is, to not replace those employees who leave us. As we have a 3% attrition at the store level, this move would automatically mean that our headcount at the stores fell by about 9% in three quarters!” But doesn’t that lead to a drop in quality of service? “Not at all,” claims Govind confidently, as – according to him – consumers don’t notice the reduction in the count of personnel from four to three. Hmm, perhaps; but in reality Govind, perhaps not. But still, giving the devil its due, while manpower cost makes up about 15-20% of the operational cost in the retail sector, for Shoppers Stop, this has dropped down to a super 7% over the last three quarters.

The travails of Mukesh Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), have been the stuff of corporate legends. But he is in more than a spot of bother at the moment. A glance at the financial results of Reliance Industries for the quarter ending December 2008 reveals that its net profits stood at Rs.350.1 million as opposed to Rs.807.9 million recorded last year – a drastic fall of 56.67%. While RIL’s petroleum business got pummelled last year (as many as 1,432 petrol pumps were shut); the retail business too is not giving a moment’s relief. After deferring the launch of its wholesale market earlier, Reliance Retail finally scrapped its cash & carry (C&C) model and showed the door to the entire team of 36 professionals headed by Harsh Bahadur (erstwhile CEO of Metro AG’s C&C business in India). This was followed by news that Reliance Retail is planning to shut down 40 of its non-performing stores and rationalising its retail space of around 4.2 million sq. ft. In 2008, Reliance Retail axed almost 600 support jobs to manage costs. It was also speculated that the back-end operations as well as management of its hypermarkets, supermarkets and convenience stores would be merged to cut costs. Will Mukesh’s Rs.250 billion retail venture be able to sustain?

Shyla’s parents couldn’t have been more shocked on learning that their daughter wanted to marry a boy whom she hadn’t been dating, but had been chatting with. “How could I ever trust anyone who Shyla had met on-line where the scope of being pretentious is thoroughly explored for the sake of fun? How can one claim to have faith in a person you’ve only chatted with and not met?” squealed Shyla’s mom, while Shyla had a different argument. “I accidentally met Bhagat on-line. He was quite interesting and so we were constantly in touch. After a year of chatting we decided to meet. We continued to stay in touch on-line. Although we had met only thrice in three years, we grew fond of each other. Now, after three years of knowing each other, we have decided to get married”, said Shyla. Due to their unrelenting stand, the families had to meet and eventually, happily agreed with their decision. “On-line dating is a risky affair because there are little chances of one being serious about it. But on the other hand, it gives a huge scope of getting in touch with and meeting different people, especially for those who are looking out for a partner. Frankly speaking, I never trusted on-line relationships but there are always exceptions, like in our case!” exclaimed Bhagat.
